Introduction
Super Mario Bros. Dog Names in Pop Culture
Pupper may be one of the most prominent instances of a real world creature garnering a lot of attention in a Mario game, but there are other fictitious animals that have been filling that dog shaped void for many decades. Chain Chomps are cast iron black, sentient ball and chain creatures that have been featured in a multitude of Mario's adventures throughout the years. These creatures were inspired by a strange, childhood experience Mario's creator, Shigeru Miyamoto, had with a dog and as such, all Chain Chomps found within the Mario franchise exhibit canine tendencies and their bark's sound exactly like a dog's. Chain Chomps usually serve as antagonists or obstacles that player have to help Mario outwit and overcome, but there are also quite a few Chain Chomps who are friendly and just want play or sleep.
Another creature from the Mario franchise that evokes the spirit of dog-kind are the Yoshi creatures. These dinosaur-like creatures have served as faithful companions to Mario and his friends, and have become popular enough in their own right to star in multiple games played from their perspective. Yoshis derive their names from a Japanese word meaning "great" and they've helped Mario countless times throughout his adventures by allowing the mustached plumber to ride on their backs. Yoshis also protect lost young children (including Mario himself, in his youth,) and spirit them back to their parents all on their own! These many attributes, as well as the Yoshis' adorable mannerisms, have caused them to be loved by millions of gamers worldwide and have inspired many dog owners within the Super Mario community to name their pets after their favorite Yoshis.
