Introduction
Batman, Superman, Spider-Man, Aquaman - what do they all have in common? First off, they are superheroes, and secondly, they are awesome! Since you are probably a superhero yourself in some manner (especially if you’ve adopted a puppy), you want a name for your dog that matches all the positive traits superheroes possess. The traits that make them special and heroic can, however, be found in a name that does not end in -man, which, if we’re being honest, sometimes does not match a non-human, for example, a dog. So, let’s binge watch superhero movies and read all the comics and get to naming!
Superhero Dog Names in Pop Culture
Not only human-like creatures can be superheroes! Sometimes, dogs are actually the ones who commit to being heroic and save the world from the perils and bad, bad guys. Such is Rex, the Wonder Dog, a superhero pup from the DC Universe. He was born a long time ago, back in 1952, when Robert Kanigher (one of the Wonder Woman creators) and Alex Toth (an American cartoonist and comic book designer) came up with the whimsical character that we now know as Rex. Our superhero is also known as the Wondrous Rex and possesses some pretty special abilities such as the power to talk to humans and other animals, incredible strength, superhuman (or, in this case, superdog) speed, magnificent stamina, high intelligence, and an exceptional longevity due to him drinking directly from the Fountain of Youth. He resides in the Earth-One and New Earth universes, has blue eyes and white coat, and for all the interested lady dogs out there – is single.
Rex’s adventure started in The Adventures of Rex the Wonder Dog which came out in 1952 and ran twice a month until October 1959. This incredible White German Shepherd started his career in the K-9 Corps of the US Army, and as he showed his talents, he was subjected to a super-soldier serum that gave him his powers. He served in World War II and received a Silver Star for his bravery. He was adopted by Major Dennis with whom he had fought in Japan and Korea, however, shortly after his adoption he ventured into a complete career change – he became a crime solver!
Rex definitely is a magnificent dog. Why? Well, apart from serving in the war, being a detective, and just overall powerful, he also managed to dip his paws in the Hollywood waters! He worked as a film star, all while solving crimes, fighting burglars, preventing murders and robberies, and working alongside firemen stopping forest fires, treading through snowy mountains and rescuing trapped hikers. He fought bears, panthers, wolves, and lions, learned to ride a horse, and even showed his talents in bull-fighting! Talk about a versatile character!
Rex’s name is a classic one. Perhaps you would think of Tyrannosaurus Rex when someone mentions his name, or maybe you’d remember your Latin classes and figure out that his name means “king” in the ancient language. However, if your first thought was T-Rex, worry not, our boy even fought him and won!
Superhero Dog Name Considerations
When thinking about an appropriate superhero name for your dog you might want to inform your girlfriend, boyfriend, and family that they will not be seeing you for a while as you will spend your days watching superhero movies and churning out your old comic books. Therefore, one of the names you might find could be Dogpool, who is actually an alternate version of Deadpool in a different reality. If you are a fan of Batman and if your new puppy is a German Shepherd, the name Ace (the Bat-Hound) could show the world that your pup is your number one AND that they are quite the crime fighter as well!
Should you want the whole world to know not to mess with your dog, just name them Krypto, after Kal-El’s (Superman’s) best Super Friend. Show your love for space travel by naming your Golden Retriever Comet, after the Comet Dog, a protagonist of The Adventures of The Comet Dog: Missing Someone Is Hard. Or perhaps your Bulldog could profit from the name Lockjaw, it lets the unwanted strangers know that he’s not to be messed with, while at the same time surprising everyone with how cuddly and sweet they really are.
