Introduction
Water polo is one of the most challenging sports out there. As the name says, it is played in water and it is highly competitive and very physically demanding. The players must be able to tread water, think about their next move, be aware of their surroundings, and employ teamwork in order to win a game. Water polo is considered to be one of the toughest sports out there, and for a reason, so if you are fascinated by it, it is no wonder that you want to name your pupper after one of the amazing athletes famous for this game.
Water Polo Inspired Dog Names in Pop Culture
Water polo is quite a popular game, especially in Europe in countries such as Hungary, Serbia, Croatia, Montenegro, Italy, Russia, Greece, and Spain, as well as in the USA, Canada, and Australia. Water rugby, as it is sometimes called, has brought up many amazing players who won gold medals at the Olympic games as well as fantastic prizes at other competitions all over the world. One of the players that will forever shine on the sky of water polo is the legendary Aleksandar Sapic, a former professional water polo player coming from Serbia, pronounced as top scorer at Olympic Games two times. He played in three Olympic games and many a competition, and he is considered to be one of the best players of all time.
Whatโs even better about Alex Sapic is that he shares his name with one amazing pup, Alex the Dog. Alex was the advertising mascot for the Strohโs beer back in the 1980s. His career was long and lucrative, as he appeared in commercials, parades, posters, and billboards. He also went on the Today show and Good Morning America! Alex was so popular that the hip-hop star Tone Loc referenced him in his hit song Funky Cold Medina. He even had a series of toys made in his image, he had his own cologne, his shampoo, and his very own hand lotion, although he could have complained about this. How come they made a hand lotion but not paw lotion? Not fair!
Alex the Dog was actually portrayed by the lovely Banjo, a part Irish Setter, part Golden Retriever, the combo made in heaven! One day, a trainer at an animal shelter found him and recognized the superstardom potential in Banjo, so he submitted him for the next mascot for the then famous Strohโs beer. Alex was a Strohโs dog from 1984 until 1989, the time when the creators of the commercial, Seth Werner, Gary Ennis, and Paul T Norwich lost their contracts with the company.
Alex the Dog is just one of many pups that had the honor to represent a whole company. It is a great honor to be chosen for such a role, specifically because the whole world will consider that dog the cutest pup in the world. Stories are usually told about these animals and they are treated like royalty wherever they go. And so was Alex the Dog, aka Benji!
Water Polo Inspired Dog Name Considerations
Picking a perfect water polo inspired name for your pup is not an easy task. Should you name them after the best player in the world? The top scorer? The strongest one? The one with the longest career? The cutest one? The decision may seem hard at first, but once you jump in the pool of water polo players, you will start exploring more, finding new information, watching more matches, and finally, making your decision. So, itโs a fun road ahead!
But, we all need to start somewhere. And you can start with the name Alex, after one of the best water polo players of all time, Aleksandar Sapic. Or, perhaps you lean more towards Brenda, after Brenda Villa, the most decorated athlete in the world of women's water polo. Maybe the name Viktor, after Viktor Nagy, a Hungarian water polo goalkeeper sounds good to you, or even Glencora, after Glencora Ralph, an Australian water polo player is a perfect choice. Whichever route you decide to go on, just know that many male names will have a slightly Slavic or Hungarian ring to it, as Hungary, Serbia, and Croatia have always been at the top of the water polo charts and have the most popular players.
