The borough of Irwin, Pennsylvania, is located in Westmoreland County, just 22 miles east of Pittsburgh. This one square mile town is nestled in the foothills of the Laurel Mountains. Here you can find plenty of small town charm, in close proximity to big city amenities! This town has its share of small urban parks sprinkled throughout for a lovely day's adventure! In the southwest corner of Irwin, off of Parklane Drive, you can find the Tinkers Run Park. The Irwin City Center isn’t all shops and busy streets! Here you can find some lovely parks and green spaces to escape to. Irwin Park, located off of Sweden Alley, is the place that all the dogs are barking about. Here you can take a heart pumping jog with your doggo along the pathway, or kick back and listen to the creek that meanders through the park. This park also features an outdoor amphitheater,that hosts free outdoor concerts during the summer. Other amenities include a variety of athletic fields, playgrounds, and benches. Well-behaved dogs are welcome to join their humans as long as they stay leashed.

This park also offers six pavilions and picnic groves, and is a great place to enjoy gatherings with friends and family. In the neighboring small town of White Oak, you can find another puppy paradise! Just 15 minutes from Irwin sits the 810 acre White Oak Park. This park truly has something in it for everyone, including multi-purpose athletic fields, playgrounds, gardens. You and your pooch will love exploring the many trails through forests and hillsides. There is something for every level of fitness, including easy paved pathways, terrain trails and “workout trails”. Perhaps your dog’s favorite part though, will be the off-leash area! Here your doggo can burn off some energy and make some furry friends off-leash in a safe, fenced in environment. There are two separate fenced off areas, one for large breeds and another for the little guys. Dogs must stay leashed when they’re not within the fenced dog park. Don’t forget the waste bags.

In Harrison City, a town just northeast of Irwin, you can find another woofderful dog park to check out. Penn Township Municipal Dog Park is just a 15 minute drive from Irwin, and it’s definitely worth it! There are two separate fenced off areas for large and small breeds, so everyone can have a safe and fun time, and plenty of large grassy areas, shade, and walking paths. You can also find waste bags, drinking water for dogs and humans, and trash cans. After working up an appetite, head over to Aiello’s Pizzeria. Here you can enjoy some fresh, handmade pizza at one of the outdoor, dog friendly tables.

When you and your pooch are itching to get into the Great Outdoors, head over to the Liberty neighborhood of McKeesport. Here you can find the many trails within and connecting to the 450 acre Dead Man’s Hollow Conservation Area, just a 25 minute drive from Irwin. One of the pawpular trails is the Great Allegheny Passage. This trail is supported by the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy Organization. Within the conservation area, you can find about 8 miles of trails that pass by ponds, wildflowers, overlooks, and industrial ruins from brick and pipe factories. Leashed dogs are welcome, as long as they leave only paw prints!
