In 1880, a group dubbed the First Mesa Company arrived in Arizona from Utah and Idaho and settled at the top of the mesa that serves as the city’s namesake. They dug irrigation canals and in July 1878, Mesa, Arizona was registered as a 1-square-mile townsite. Mesa City was incorporated in 1883 with a very small population of only 300 people. Mesa has since expanded to become the 3rd largest city in Arizona and the 38th largest city in the United States, as home to over 445,000 people.
