Central Silverton
Is your pup itching for a hike? The beautiful Rainbow Trail follows an old railroad line. A gradual grade takes your through forests and also near stunning red rock mountains. Avalanches have made parts of the trail rocky, so keep an eye on your pup. If you need a place to stay while visiting, make a reservation at Inn of the Rockies-Alma House. Located right in the heart of the historic district, this hotel is the perfect place to relax with your pup after a day of exploring. Traveling in an RV? The Silver Summit RV Park is nearby. Just keep in mind that dogs must be leashed when not in your vehicle.

East Silverton
Silverton has endless possibilities to enjoy the great outdoors with your pup. Check out the Lakawana Mill Trail that starts from the base of the Kendall Mountain Recreation Center. Follow this trail as it zig zags along the base of the mountain and eventually ends up at Aspen Town, a puptastic collection of abandoned homes from the 1800s. Head back to town the way you came or let your pup explore new territory by looping through Arastra Gulch. For a more mellow walk, head over to Memorial Park and stroll along wooded paths near a babbling brook. This park will definitely make your pup’s tail wag!

South Silverton
Molas Lake Campground is a furrific destination for a weekend getaway with your furry BFF. Whether you have an RV or rouging it in a tent, this place has a campsite for you. Enjoy spectacular scenery of a mountain lake with rugged peaks in the background. Dogs must be on leash while in the campground. The campground has access to the famed Colorado Trail, which stretches 471 miles from Durango to Denver. Follow the Little Molas Lake to Lime Creek section for a five mile trek through open meadows and lodgepole pines. Your pooch will absolutely love hiking among the peaks of the Rocky Mountains.

West Silverton
When in Silverton, a hike to Ice Lakes is a must. It’s easy to see why this gorgeous hike is a favorite among locals and visitors. Be prepared to be amazed by the scenery and get a leg workout. The trail gains significant elevation, but it’s definitely worth it. Follow the trail through fields of wildflowers and past waterfalls running down the rocky slops. Lower Ice Lake sits in a small valley that provides views of the surrounding mountains. If your pooch isn’t too tired, continue on to Upper Ice Lake, a turquoise alpine lake encircled by towering peaks. The hike is seven miles round trip, so make sure pal is up for this adventure.

Ouray
Ouray is small community about 45 minutes north of Silverton. It is home to the puptastic Cascade Falls Park. If your pooch is a fan of waterfalls, be sure to stop by and check it out. The park is named after a series of seven waterfalls that delivers the snow melt to Cascade Creek. Lower Cascade Falls is easily reached by a short steep trail, which leashed pups are welcome to hike. If you want to venture further up the mountain, there is a five mile trail that leads to views of the Upper Falls. It is strenuous, so if you go this route make sure your pooch is up for the trek.
