Silverton is tucked away in a mountain valley in San Juan County. Back in the day, Silverton thrived as mining town. Once gold and silver was found in nearby mines, hotels, saloons, dance halls, and large homes were built. Today, the mining history is so well preserved that the entire town is a national historic landmark. During the summer, tourists come to get a first hand look of the Old West.
Dining out with your furry friend is easy to do in Silverton. Leash up your pup and head over to the Avalanche Brewing Company. This place specializes in craft beer, pizza, salads, and wraps. The patio is known for welcoming four legged friends, so your dog will feel right at home. For more casual dining, head over to Bent Elbow. What was once a rowdy saloon is now a hotel and restaurant with pet friendly outdoor seating. Nosh on some macaroni and cheese or a juicy burger while Fido hangs out by your side.
Since Silverton is on the smaller side, it doesn’t have any veterinary clinics of its own. If your pet needs care, head an hour south to Durango. You’ll find four clinics ready to help your pooch get back to tip top shape.
The rich history, mountains galore, and small town hospitality make this town one pawsome place!

Ouray is small community about 45 minutes north of Silverton. It is home to the puptastic Cascade Falls Park. If your pooch is a fan of waterfalls, be sure to stop by and check it out. The park is named after a series of seven waterfalls that delivers the snow melt to Cascade Creek. Lower Cascade Falls is easily reached by a short steep trail, which leashed pups are welcome to hike. If you want to venture further up the mountain, there is a five mile trail that leads to views of the Upper Falls. It is strenuous, so if you go this route make sure your pooch is up for the trek.
