Thinking about settling into Lake City? This enchanting mountain town is a great place for families who love to live surrounded by nature. While there are no designated dog parks in the area, you’ll find you don’t need one! Walk along the Henson Creek Trail, or visit the Lake City Town Park for some exercise. Just be sure to keep Fido safely leashed. In the summer, you can even camp out at the River Fork Campgrounds nearby. For even more outdoor fun, venture a few miles north to the Waterdog Lake, which features a moderately difficult trail for more experienced four-legged hikers.

Ironton

Ouray is a rural mountain town separated from Lake City by a cluster of mountain peaks. It takes about 2 hours by car to reach and offers truly breathtaking views of the San Juan Skyway as well as popular ghost towns throughout Colorado. The ghost town of Ironton, for example, lies just several miles south, and you and your pup can explore the historic area on foot. For more on-foot adventures, check out the Ironton Park trails, ranging from easy to difficult for hikers of all levels. Plus, there are dozens of accommodations that welcome you and Fido. Some even have hot springs!

Rio Grande National Forest

Want to immerse yourself in nature alongside your best friend? Take a trip to the Rio Grande National Forest, where pets are welcome, so long as they remain leashed. On the way down, you can stop by the Cascada Bar & Grill and chow down at their outdoor seating while Fido begs at your feet. Once you’ve arrived, you can explore one of the many hiking trails with your furry friend; just remember to keep them on a leash or under your command. No matter the season, there is much to see here, and you can even enjoy rural camping during open seasons!

Colorado Avenue

Telluride is an active mountain city located in a box canyon just next to a popular ski resort. Pawfect for the outdoorsy pup, Telluride has tons of different trails to choose from during the various seasons. You can also find the Town Park on the other side of the San Miguel River, which you can visit with Fido – just remember to bring a leash! On the other side of the Telluride Ski Resort is the Mountain Village, which can be accessed via a quick ride across the nation’s first public gondola system! It even includes a pet-friendly cabin for well-behaved pups!

South Ridgway

Iconic views of the Rocky Mountains surround Ridgway, located across the mountains from Lake City. A two-and-a-half hour drive, Ridgway offers a hospitable little town right at the base of the San Juan Mountains. Find yourself exploring the town on a hot summer day? Visit the Ridgway off-leash area, where your pup can run around and cool off in the Uncompahgre River. For long walks, you can also visit Hartwell Park with Fido on a leash. Hungry? Eatery 66 is an outdoor joint open seasonally that welcomes patrons of the four-legged variety alongside their human friends!
