Dog Areas in Monterey, LA

Monterey, a city southwest of Ferriday, is a census-designated place in Concordia Parish. In rural Louisiana, it can be tough to find pet-friendly places -- this is true for Monterey as well. You can sniff out some amenities in Ferriday (20 miles north) and Ridgecrest (23 miles north), but sometimes, you may have to drive for an hour or more to find true adventure with your pup. Ferriday has a few simple drive-ins and fast-food restaurants, while Ridgecrest offers vet clinics.

While mod-cons can be hard to find here, you're just steps away from an abundance of wildlife refuges and natural areas near Monterey -- most of them are not pet-friendly, though. However, Bayou Cocodrie NWR on your way to Ferriday is! This vast green space is a united habitat for many species within the Lower Mississippi River Valley! The place is perfect for strolling on-leash with Fido on the trails. You can watch birds and explore the endless woodlands as well. Hunting and fishing are also an option, but check the rules and restrictions online before visiting.

Joe’s Horseshoe and Marina is one of the few pet-friendly restaurants near Monterey. The place is pawpular but never crowded. You will find it along Highway 129, on the banks of Cocodrie River and Bayou Cocodrie. It’s a snifftastic, simple place with indoor seating welcoming small and lap dogs.

You will find Archie, a small, populated area in Louisiana, 13 minutes west of Jonesville. The journey here will be a pleasant ride along the Little River stream! The community is home to a small local wildlife refuge -- however, you and Fido should head to Catahoula National Wildlife Refuge. It’s a huge green space right across from the village, complete with 25,000 acres of striking wildlife and wilderness. Keep in mind that, although pups are welcome on-leash in the area, you'll have to get a permit before visiting the refuge.
