Monterey, a city southwest of Ferriday, is a census-designated place in Concordia Parish. In rural Louisiana, it can be tough to find pet-friendly places -- this is true for Monterey as well. You can sniff out some amenities in Ferriday (20 miles north) and Ridgecrest (23 miles north), but sometimes, you may have to drive for an hour or more to find true adventure with your pup. Ferriday has a few simple drive-ins and fast-food restaurants, while Ridgecrest offers vet clinics.
While mod-cons can be hard to find here, you're just steps away from an abundance of wildlife refuges and natural areas near Monterey -- most of them are not pet-friendly, though. However, Bayou Cocodrie NWR on your way to Ferriday is! This vast green space is a united habitat for many species within the Lower Mississippi River Valley! The place is perfect for strolling on-leash with Fido on the trails. You can watch birds and explore the endless woodlands as well. Hunting and fishing are also an option, but check the rules and restrictions online before visiting.
Joe’s Horseshoe and Marina is one of the few pet-friendly restaurants near Monterey. The place is pawpular but never crowded. You will find it along Highway 129, on the banks of Cocodrie River and Bayou Cocodrie. It’s a snifftastic, simple place with indoor seating welcoming small and lap dogs.
You will find Archie, a small, populated area in Louisiana, 13 minutes west of Jonesville. The journey here will be a pleasant ride along the Little River stream! The community is home to a small local wildlife refuge -- however, you and Fido should head to Catahoula National Wildlife Refuge. It’s a huge green space right across from the village, complete with 25,000 acres of striking wildlife and wilderness. Keep in mind that, although pups are welcome on-leash in the area, you'll have to get a permit before visiting the refuge. If you want to camp nearby, Old River Campground in Rhinehart is a cool place to stop!
Bringhurst Park is Alexandria Junction’s hidden gem. You will find the neighborhood in the eastern-central part of Alexandria, Louisiana. The region has a lot of local amenities and cozy neighborhood quarters. The central area of Bringhurst Park is pawfect for picnics! The park provides an open space with a long, shaded shelter. Bring some food with you to share with the pup! Here, you'll also find a playground for kids and a splash pad to cool off. There’s also an old baseball field here, where you can play with Fido if there are no games on. However, always keep your buddy on-leash!
Kingsville is an expansive neighborhood in the northeastern part of Pineville, Louisiana. It will take you a bit more than an hour to get to the area from Monterey. Here, you will find lots of fast-food chains where you are welcome with Fido, in addition to local shops, stores, and a park! Kees Park is a little local attraction for the whole family. It has a playground for kids and a lot of picnic tables, making it a good place to share a sandwich or ice cream with your pup in the shade! There are no walking or hiking trails, but Fido is welcome on-leash in any area. Remember to clean up after your pup!
If you need a low-key resort, outdoor fun, and indoor attractions at the same time, Cocoville in Marksville is a fantastic choice! It’s a very friendly and quite touristy neighborhood in the southern region of Marksville, LA. Stay overnight on a budget in Hampton Inn & Suites with Fido! Check the website for information on fees and restrictions. Love em-bark-ing on adventures in nature? Then you should paw on over to Paragon Casino Resort and RV Park! This spot is a fun, local favorite place to "ruff" it with a canine companion. And, yes, all areas are pet-friendly! Just keep the leash with you at all times.
Looking to sniff out a pet-friendly wildlife area to visit with Fido near Monterey? Dewey Wills Wildlife Management is at your service! It’s a vast swamp-like area with thousands of species of flora and fauna and acres of woodlands! It also offers beautiful views of Catahoula Lake and the best bird-watching opportunities in the state! (Make sure to check the rules and regulations for hunting and fishing with pets.) Or, you can just go for a walk through this beautiful area. Don’t forget to clean up after your dog, though.
