Just east of Lake Erie, in the greater Metro Detroit area, lies the small town of Newport, Michigan. This town boasts of charm, and offers residents and visitors a non-hurried pace, compared to the larger, nearby cities. For some outdoor adventure with your fur-ever friend, head to Robert Laginess Park. This small area offers you and your pup some relaxation time on their open grassy areas, and a great playground structure for the kiddies. There are no bathrooms on site, so plan accordingly. Fido must remain on leash here.  

For more adventure, head to the Pointe Mouillee State Game Area that offers a whopping 4000 acres alongside the Huron River and Lake Erie. This land is full of wildlife because of its marshes and ponds, so it is the perfect place to capture incredible photographs of the flora and fauna of the area. Make sure to get some pics of your pup having a great time here. Pack plenty of water and snacks for your day together.

This open space is used by model airplane clubs to show off their skills. You and your fur-ever friend are welcome to watch! Jump on the .6-mile loop which offers historical information along the way, or its one-mile trail through the historical battle grounds. For a bit more time together, take the 4.4 loop which connects with the Sterling State Park and River Raisin Heritage Trail. Next, visit Heck Park which offers quiet time amongst the Veteran’s Memorial. Keep Fido on leash at both.

Take the Sterling-Marsh Trail for 6 miles of hiking fun, or the shorter Sterling-River Raisin Heritage Trail which is a 1.60-mile loop, perfect for all pup-abilities. There are boating opportunities, and fishing directly on the lake or the lagoons within. Be sure to keep Fido on leash throughout. Restrooms are provided.
