Southeast Winnabow
Step back in time with Fido at Brunswick Town/Fort Anderson! The site of Brunswick County's original settlement, this historic area is now open to visitors, including those with four legs, for free. Some of the structures that you and your pup will see here include the walls of St. Philips Church and the foundation of Russelborough, which used to be the home of two royal governors. To learn more about the history of the colonial town, the ruins, and Fort Anderson, follow the trails that lead to the outdoor exhibits. Always keep your best friend on a leash while exploring Brunswick Town/Fort Anderson!

Northeast Boiling Spring Lakes
Should you and your pupper find yourselves in nearby Boiling Spring Lakes, stop by Alton Lennon Park to stretch your legs. About 16 minutes from Winnabow, this park offers the only public boat access to the city's centerpiece, the 275-acre Patricia Lake or “Big Lake.” Take your canine companion for a leisurely leashed walk by the water, or enjoy the view from a picnic table or bench swing. Another waterfront park in the area is Spring Lake Park, which also has bench swings and picnic tables where you and Fido can hang out. There's a short nature trail next to the beach as well.

Hawkswater
See the Brunswick River up close at the Brunswick Riverwalk at Belville! A 12-minute drive from Winnabow, this riverside park in neighboring Belville is home to a boat access, viewing deck, and 125-foot fishing pier. Follow the 0.3-mile walking trail, boardwalk, and nature trails with your pup to explore this beautiful and relaxing site. The trails are marked for your convenience, and visitors say that there are plenty of wildlife to see, so don't forget to bring your camera! If you and your pooch need to take a pawse from walking around, there are three picnic shelters where you can duck under for a break.

Shoreline
Head out 7 miles northeast of Winnabow to the nearby town of Leland, and you'll find a fairly secluded park where you and your pooch can go for a quiet leashed stroll. Nestled behind a commercial and residential area, the Westgate Nature Park features a nature-inspired playground, event lawn, picnic area, and lush landscaping. There's also a spacious, 0.3-mile nature trail that meanders through the woods, connects to an elevated boardwalk, and ends at an outdoor classroom overlooking the wetlands. Fact sheets about the local flora and fauna dot the trail, so you can learn more about the area while getting some exercise in with Fido.

If you need to spend a few days in Winnabow with your dog in tow, check into the Holiday Inn Express in nearby Leland. A 9-minute drive from Winnabow, this pet-friendly establishment welcomes two pets up to 50 pounds for an extra fee. A dog walking area behind the hotel ensures that your pooch can still get their daily exercise despite being on the road. Note that four-legged guests cannot be left unattended in rooms and are not allowed on furniture or in public areas.
