One of the three “emerald necklaces” in the Union County parks system, the Passaic River Parkway is a gem that you can experience with your canine companion. Enjoy the fresh air and woofderful views as you and Fido take a leashed stroll on the nature trail that meanders along the Passaic River, through a wildflower meadow, and past a deer exclosure. Keep your eyes peeled for the diverse flora and fauna that call this area home, too. Afterwards, drive a couple of minutes to Kawee Thai Cuisine to get some food. The gated patio contains dog-friendly tables that you can share with Fido.

Mountainside
A tired pooch is a happy pooch, and the Echo Lake Dog Park is the pawfect place to tire your pup out. Located in the center of Echo Lake Park in nearby Mountainside, this dog park spans 3 acres, giving energetic canines plenty of room to run, play, and socialize off-leash. There are separate areas for large and small puppers, plus benches for the dog parents to sit on. Water, bowls, and waste bags are provided as well. If Fido's not in the mood to socialize, go for a leashed walk on the trails around Echo Lake Park and have a picnic by the water instead.

Mountain Ave
If Fido's up for an outdoor adventure, head over to the Passaic River County Park in the neighboring township of Warren. This undeveloped preserve property is a furrific spot not only for getting some exercise in, but also for spending some quality time with your four-legged pal. The Glenhurst Meadows Nature Trail is a part of the park that not many people know about, but should not be missed. Comprising dog-friendly, mostly level hiking trails that stretch over 2 miles, the Glenhurst Meadows Nature Trail will lead you and Fido across meadows and wetlands, around open ponds, and along berms at the edge of the river.

Scotch Plains South
The Ponderosa Farm Park in nearby Scotch Plains is a puptastic place to bring the entire family, canine members included. A sprayground and two children's play areas are the 23-acre park's main attractions, but there are other amenities that Fido can enjoy. Go for a leashed stroll on the paved walking/biking trail, have a picnic under the shade of the oak trees, or just hang out on a bench with your pooch. According to visitors, the Ponderosa Farm Park can get crowded during the summer, so go early to snag a parking spot. Remember to bring doggie waste bags for cleaning up after Fido.

Cedarbrook
Should you and Fido find yourselves in this neighborhood in nearby Plainfield, you can take him for his walkies at Cedar Brook Park. One of the most popular parks in the Union County parks system, Cedar Brook is frequented by residents and tourists alike thanks to its recreational opportunities and aesthetic beauty. Take a leisurely stroll on the walking paths and stop by the Shakespeare Garden, where you'll find beautiful flowers and landscaping. Don't forget to pack your pup's favorite treats so you can have a picnic as well. Cedar Brook Park also houses multiple athletic courts and fields, a fishing pond, and a children's playground.
