N Ave W/ Prospect St
The Westfield neighborhood of N Ave W/ Prospect St is just two and a half miles from Fanwood, and is an extremely dog-friendly area. The 12.6 acre Mindowaskin Park is pawfect for a leisurely dog walk, because not only is it home to a playground, bandstand and picnic areas, but also lush gardens that are beautiful to explore. For pups who enjoy dining out, this neighborhood is home to a wide array of dog-friendly restaurants, such as Turning Point, which specializes in breakfast, brunch and lunch. For traditional Mexican cuisine, take Fido to Tinga Taqueria, while dogs who prefer Italian will love the authentic dishes at Ferraro's.

Mountainside
The small town of Mountainside is less than four miles from Fanwood, and is where you will find some of the finest parks in the area. Echo Lake Park is large, with everything from sports facilities and fishing areas to a playground, and is also home to the Echo Lake Dog Park. This fenced-off park stretches out for three acres, with separate sections for smaller and larger dogs, giving them all plenty of space to run free off the lead. For another pawtastic walk, head to the 1,945 acre Watchung Reservation, which is the largest nature reserve in Union County. Complete with lakes, walking trails, historic monuments and more, this is a park that your pooch will definitely enjoy.

Rahway Ave/ Willow Grove Rd
Less than a ten minute drive from Fanwood is the Westfield neighborhood of Rahway Ave/ Willow Grove Rd, where you and Fido will find even more spacious green areas to explore. The Tamaques Reservation is home to sports facilities, a playground, and historic monuments, while Tamaques Park boasts even more sports facilities, as well as an eight mile walking path. There is a small area of the park where dogs are allowed to run off the lead, but since this is not fenced-off, your dog needs to be well-trained to make the most of this. Also within this neighborhood is access to Unami Park, which has a large playground and a tree-lined walking path that is pawfect for a stroll with Fido.

Cranford Town Center
The Town Center of Cranford is less than five miles from Fanwood, and is not only home to a great park, but also to several dog-friendly restaurants. Begin your day at Droescher's Mill Park, where you will be able to show your pooch the last remaining mill on the Rahway River. Also within this park is the Cranford portion of the Rahway River Parkway, a green stretch of parkland that follows alongside the Rahway River. For a bite to eat afterwards, there are plenty of dog-friendly options available. Ciao Bello has a large outdoor seating area where you and Fido can enjoy some classic Italian dishes, while Romola's Seafood and Grille has a lunch and dinner menu with so much variety.

Springfield Ave/ West End Pl
Just six miles from Fanwood is the Cranford neighborhood of Springfield Ave/ West End Pl, and there are numerous parks for you and your pooch to explore here. At 100 acres in size, Nomahegan Park is the largest, with sports facilities, a playground, picnic areas and a nature trail. Lenape Park, which has been around since the 1850's, is also popular, with walking trails, a famous carousel, and several spacious grassy areas. There are also a couple of smaller parks in this neighborhood worth checking out, such as Hampton Park with its river views, and MacConnell Park with its scenic fishing areas.
