Hermann
Located in downtown Carteret, the Hermann neighborhood is a great place to continue your exploration of the Carteret area. After spending your morning at the Carteret Waterfront Park, you and your pup will likely be hankering for some good grub. Thankfully, the Hermann neighborhood is home to the one and only pet-friendly restaurant in all of Carteret: Alfredo's Restaurant and Pizzeria. With delicious Italian cuisine ranging from pizzas, pastas, sandwiches, calzones and more, you and your furry friend are sure to find something that will satisfy every craving. Your pup is welcome at any of the outdoor tables.36

Avenel
Ruffly 10 minutes east of downtown Carteret brings you to the neighborhood of Avenel, home of Ernest L. Oros park. This park offers area visitors the chance to escape the city hustle and bustle for a few moments and reconnect with nature. With nearly 100 acres of preserved land and hiking trails, plus an additional 50 acres of water, this park is the purrfect place to take in all of the area's natural beauty with your furry friend by your side. Always be sure to keep your pup on their leash, and be mindful of the local wildlife, which includes various types of birds and snakes.24

Green Brook City Limits
A short 30-minute drive west of Carteret will bring you to the Green Brook Township. Perhaps the greatest highlight of this area is the Washington Rock State Park. This 52-acre park sits atop the first mountain of the Watchung Mountains, a group of three long, low ridges. Washington Rock State Park is famous for its scenic overlook, previously used by General George Washington to monitor British troops during the Revolutionary War. Nowadays, the park offers its visitors several walking trails and a picnic area in a beautiful wooded setting. The lovely neighborhood of Washington pawsitively cannot be missed.12

New Vernon
Head ruffly 40 minutes northwest of Carteret to reach the neighborhood of New Vernon, home of the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge. This is another purrfect place to enjoy some quality time with nature alongside your furry friend. Encompassing nearly 8000 acres, the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge provides visitors, both human and dog alike, with excellent hiking opportunities with various trails, boardwalks and observation decks located throughout the reserve. Be sure to bring your binoculars so you can check out the numerous species of birds that frequent the park, both native and migratory! Just make sure your dog is always on a leash in order to preserve the land and respect the local wildlife.
