Just 7 miles west of Pontiac, you’ll find the community of Angola on the Lake. In this lakeside neighborhood, you and Fido can explore Erie County Wendt Beach Park. Take a stroll in the fields just off the beach of this 170-acre facility that stretches north toward Derby. Dogs are welcome in non-beach areas provided they are on a leash and you pick up their messes. After a day of exploring, head to Connors on the south side of town and grab one of the pup-friendly outdoor tables. Enjoy a some satisfying American cuisine while your furry pal relaxes by your side.

Lake Erie Beach

Pack up the car, grab your pup, and head about 6.5 miles east of Pontiac to the community of Lake Erie Beach. Hike through the wetlands and along the nature trails in Evangola State Park. Feel free to bring a picnic lunch and enjoy the beautiful shoreline.  Depending on the season, you and Fido can catch view of some spectacular sights. In winter, check out ice volcanoes along the Lake Erie shoreline, or come in September to see the Monarchs resting in the trees as they migrate to Mexico for the winter. Reserve a campsite to extend your stay in this outdoor wonderland. Up to 2 pets are permitted per camper, provided you keep them on a leash no longer than 6 feet and you pick up any droppings.

Hamburg

Hamburg

Known as “the town that friendship built,” the community of Hamburg is about 11 miles northeast of Pontiac. Come here with Fido to explore the rugged outdoors in Eighteen Mile Creek Park. Hike through the undeveloped 464-acre facility with your pup and enjoy the natural woodlands. You can also bring a fishing pole along and try to catch some steelhead. Dogs are allowed in this county park provided that they are kept on a leash and that you pick up their waste. After exploring this expansive wild area, head into town for some food. Enjoy a light bite at Comfort Zone Cafe, or try something a little more upscale at Carte Blanche. Both restaurants offer dog-friendly outdoor seating.

Take a short 7.5-mile drive north of Pontiac with your pooch to get to the neighborhood of Lake View. In this area, you’ll be able to give your pup some off-leash exercise with other four-footed friends at Rootie’s Run Hamburg Dog Park. This pawtastic facility is located in the Lakeview Road Recreation Area, and it has separate play spaces for small and large pooches. Owners can bring up to three dogs into the park at the same time to romp with other pups. Canine companions that visit the park must be licensed, vaccinated, and spayed or neutered. Remember to clean up after your pooch.

Orchard Park

If you love to get out and explore nature with your pooch, pack up the car and take Fido about 18 miles northeast of Pontiac to the community of Orchard Park. Enjoy a hike or jog through Birdsong Parklands. Take the paved trail by the lake or wander through the woodlands with your furry friend. Following an afternoon of exploring and viewing wildlife, head downtown to Mangia Ristorante and Cafe. You can select from a range of soups, sandwiches, pizza, wraps, and much more while your canine companion lounges at your feet. This pup-friendly establishment allows dogs at the outdoor tables.
