A rainy Mediterranean climate with mild winters and dry summers will welcome you in Reedsport, a city in Douglas County, Oregon, located at the junction of Oregon Route 38 and U.S. Route 101. The city and neighboring Winchester Bay form the prominent “Heart of the Oregon Dunes”, a 47-mile area covered in sand stretching from Florence to North Bend. Reedsport offers plenty of opportunities for outdoor fun at the dunes, forests, and even its very own dog park. The downtown area features a few pet-friendly eateries and two veterinary clinics.
You'd be barking mad to visit Reedsport and not drop by Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area, complete with OHV riding opportunities, hiking trails, camping, picnicking, and wildlife viewing! Leashed pooches are welcome in most areas of the park, including Cape Perpetua Scenic Area and Botanical Area, but can’t play in beach areas. It goes without saying that you'll need to bring plenty of water and waste bags with you to the dunes.
Tired of leashes and rules? Time to head to Champion Dog Park, an amazing 7-acre dog spot with plenty of room to run and two areas for small and large breeds to play separately! The place is perfect for travelers, easy to find, and has all the amenities you'll need, including drinking water and benches.
You will find the northern part of Lakeside a convenient destination, especially if you travel from Reedsport with Fido. In a short drive, no more than 20 minutes south, you'll find the vast area of William M. Tugman State Park along the Oregon Coast Highway. This is a wonderful place to take your pup for a hike or a day outdoors! You can hike near the southern part of the lake, following the multiple trails and loops, or enjoy some quality time with your fur baby while fishing, canoeing, or just relaxing and taking in the beauty of the park's untamed wilderness.
Tenmile is tucked in the western end of Lakeside, but the area belongs to North Bend, a city in Coos County located 30 miles south of Reedsport. If you love hiking and your pooch has endless energy, John Dellenback Dunes Trail is a wonderful hiking spot winding throughout sand dunes, spruce forests, and a beach area. Need some adrenaline and an unforgettable experience? Explore the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Center on a dune buggy! You can choose your own path, traveling along the dunes and trails or enjoying a view of the Pacific Ocean. Make sure that your buddy is leashed and feels comfortable in the back of the buggy.
Tremont Avenue is one of the main arterial streets connecting North Bend and Coos Bay together, offering a range of shops, drive-thrus, and fast food options for locals and frequent visitors. If your pup is tired from a long ride and needs a place to stretch his legs, Gracie Land, a small, fenced dog park in the northern part of Coos Bay, will be a perfect option! The park is adjacent to Coos Bay Toyota, which operates and maintains the area, but is open to public year-round from dawn to dusk! This simple facility is a great pit-stop to chat with locals, play fetch, or just walk around with Fido.
Coquille is a city in and the county seat of Coos County, located about an hour's ride south of Reedsport. The city features an industrial area that's mostly centered around the lumber industry. Coquille isn't the dog-friendliest place in the world, but it has the pawfect place for Fido to play! Coquille Dog Park, an expansive and fenced dog spot, is located within the 5th Street Park area and invites pooches from all over to ditch the leash and sniff out some new canine companions. Set in the heart of the city, the park has benches, plenty of shade, running drinking water, and is very easy to find.
