Introduction
Alaskan Husky Dog Names in Pop Culture
In the story, Yukon King was a Husky puppy raised by a mother wolf. When a lynx attacked the mother and cub, Sergeant Preston arrived just in time to save the small pup. He then raised the animal as his own dog team captain. While it was never stated whether King is an Alaskan or Siberian Husky, we will use this story to illustrate how cool the Husky dog is, their unfaltering loyalty and their toughness to survive in climates that would kill most dogs. Challenge of the Yukon began as a 15 minute series on a local Detroit radio station and continued from 1938 until 1947 when a new sponsor, Quaker Oats, increased the air time to 30 minutes and then moved it into the networks. Yukon King was Sergeant Preston's greatest ally, often leading the team, being a close companion and helping the Sergeant in finding criminals and bringing them to justice. A television series began in 1955 and ran for 78 episodes. The dog that played King was also called King, and lived a long and happy life, and passed away in advanced old age well in the 1960's. Loyal and true, the legend of Yukon King lives on in Pop culture.
Highlighting the importance the Husky has had in the past is a story of the Iditarod Trail where teams of sled dogs, consisting of Alaskan Huskies and other breeds, moved goods and people across the frozen landscape. The Seward to Nome Trail was originally known as the Iditarod Trail. It was 1908 and there was a gold rush in full flush after two prospectors made a Christmas Day Strike in the Iditarod Mining District. Often, dog teams were the only way to get around the area. In the winter of 1925 there was a deadly outbreak of diphtheria in Nome; winter had closed the port and there was no way in or out. Serum from Anchorage was rushed by means of the train to the town of Nenana, where the serum was picked up by a sled dog relay. Twenty of Alaska's best mushers and their dedicated teams carried the serum 674 miles (1,085 km ) from Nenana to Nome in just over 27 hours. It was an amazing feat by the sled dogs. These dogs braved white out conditions, severe storms, cold and ice to brave their way to the town of Nome where the much needed serum was welcomed. Balto and Togo were two of the dogs that became famous from this amazing trek. Today teams compete this very trail each year in honor of the past heroes - both the men and their valiant dogs.
