Alpine Dachsbracke Dog Names

Mention of the Alpine Dachsbracke appears in history during the 1800s when Crown Prince Rudolf of Habsburg added them to his hunting dog kennel. It is recorded in many historical documents that Prince Rudolf favored the Alpine Dachsbracke and had them with him on several hunting expeditions throughout Austria. The Alpine Dachsbracke is most famous for accompanying Prince Rudolf on hunting trips to Egypt and Turkey as is depicted in photographs and paintings preserved from these trips.  Hunting was a favorite pastime of Prince Rudolf and he preferred the sturdy, shorter-legged hound to the longer-legged scent hounds that other nobility used during hunts. The Alpine Dachsbracke could traverse through thick undergrowth and track over all types of terrain whereas other hunting dogs were limited to specific types of terrain.  Because of Prince Rudolf’s fondness for the breed, it is believed that only royals were allowed to own the Alpine Dachsbracke and it was not until the early 1900s that non-royals could own them. While many historians argue the Alpine Dachsbracke was in existence for hundreds of years prior to Prince Rudolf documenting them for his kennel, there is no historical evidence to support these claims.

It was not until 1932 that the Alpine Dachsbracke became accepted as the third scent hound from Austria and was registerable. Even today, this is an extremely rare breed outside of Austria. There are only a handful of Alpine Dachsbrackes within the United States and those had to be imported into the country from Europe. In order to find a breeder of Alpine Dachsbracke, a person needs to search the Klub Dachsbracke website for available puppies and breeders. Chira is one Alpine Dachsbracke that is featured on the Klub Dachsbracke website and is owned by Thomas Rupp. Chira is officially known as Chira vom Mortbuhel and was bred at Schnepfenstein Kennels in Austria. Chira is a female Alpine Dachsbracke and is a typical breed representative. Another Alpine Dachsbracke breeder, Bruno Sabitzer of Strasboug, Austria occasionally offers puppies from his female, Diana von den Hadenboden, or Diana, and his male Hugo vom Geierkogel, or Hugo. Josef Kohlmaier of Penk, Austria is also another common breeder highlighted on the Klub Dachsbracke website with puppies out of his Alpine Dachsbracke female Mira von Althausen, or Mira, and Pero von der Grunalm, or Pero. While it may seem difficult to find an Alpine Dachsbracke puppy to add to your family, this loyal, intelligent, albeit stubborn hound does make an excellent family companion when trained properly and given enough opportunity to work their mind and body.
