When they are not hunting the American English Coonhound is a mellow companion, but when they are in the field they are tenacious and stubborn. American English Coonhounds that are not used for their original purpose of hunting raccoons and fox will need to be part of an active family that keeps them busy throughout the day. The American English Coonhound is a vocal dog and will become excessively loud when they are left to their own devices for too long. They do not do well being kenneled or put in the backyard and ignored. Peruse our list of names, suitable for this noble and inquisitive breed!
American English Coonhound Dog Names in Pop Culture
The American English Coonhound is a storied breed that was brought to the colonies to hunt fox during the day and raccoons at night. Sportsmen have found them to be fantastic trackers willing to follow a trail for miles until their prey is found. The American English Coonhound can also be found in the conformation ring, such as Rasputin or ACHA YWLDCH GRNITECH CH AKC CCH UKC GRNITECH GRCH Taylor’s Rasputin HTX DNA-P. Rasputin, or Raz for short, came from Woodstock English Kennels and he was one of the last puppies from NITECH Woodstock Grizzly who was a renowned expert hunter. As a puppy, Raz’s handlers had high hopes for his hunting career when he treed his first raccoon at only five months of age. At only nine months old, Rasputin won first place and high scoring dog with a 575+ at the 2009 Kentucky State Championship. In 2010, Raz placed third in the English Days Nite Championship trials and was the high scoring male with 1100+ points. He also finished his UKC Nite Championships with multiple Sectional King of Hunts and Overall High Scoring Dog of Hunts. Rasputin was able to move up from the Open class to the Grand Nite Champion class in eight consecutive hunts.
Rasputin continued his winning streak in January of 2011 when he was named the 2010 Coonhound of the Year with an accumulation of 6,925 points. In 2011, Raz was also earned his American Coonhound Association’s (ACHA) Nite Championship and qualified to participate in the ACHA’s World Hunt. Rasputin earned his ACHA Grand NITE Championship in 2012 and placed sixth at the ACHA Little World Hunt. Raz earned his UKC conformation championship and grand championship in 2013 and was also the ACHA Little World Hunt Reserve World Champion as the high scoring English male. Rasputin also qualified for the UKC World Championship Hunt and the English Days Champion of Champions Hunt. Other notable accomplishments in Rasputin’s career include being an ACHA Youth World Champion, earning an AKC CCH title, an ACHA Champion title, being the 2015 CHCK Kentucky State Race leader and earning the UKC HTX title.
Rasputin was an integral part of his owner’s cancer diagnosis. Through his caring nature and stubbornness, Raz detected his owner’s cancer by constantly touching the area where the cancer was located. This prompted his owner to go to his doctor and the cancer was found early enough to be treated. Rasputin has also helped put Taylor Made Kennels on the map. Taylor Made Kennels is focused on producing American English Coonhounds that can perform well in the field and in the show ring.
American English Coonhound Dog Name Considerations
American English Coonhounds are exciting dogs to have around. They are typical hounds and love mischief. If you are an avid hunter, this Coonhound is perfect for you, however, if you have no intention of hitting the fields with your American English Coonhound you will find this dog to be a bit of a handful. They are high energy and very vocal with that signature bray that hounds have been known to unleash when they are excited. There is a plethora of classic hound names that would be fantastic for your new American English Coonhound.
Take the time to get to know your new puppy’s personality before you make your final decision on their name. For field work, you will want to keep their name short and distinctive enough that they will know you are calling them and not another dog. Look for names that everyone in the family can agree on and make a list of your favorites. Once you get to know your new puppy you can start narrowing your list down until you eventually find the right name. For male American English Coonhounds, classic names such as Bruno, Jethro, Roscoe , or Huckleberry might be a good fit for your puppy. Female American English Coonhounds could be named Ellie Mae, Dixie, Chloe, or Penny.
