Introduction
The Argentine Dogo, also known as the Dogo Argentino, is a breed of hunting dog that was originally developed to chase big game such as pumas and wild boars. A surgeon named Antonio Nores Martinez bred the Argentine Dogo not just for hunting but also for companionship. This stocky cross breed has a radiant white coat, a strong body and a keen sense of responsiveness. Proper training, frequent exercise and socialization is necessary for this breed; using force or other callous acts can result in aggressive behavior. A courageous yet kind dog, the Argentine Dogo is a good choice for a first-time dog owner.
Argentine Dogo Dog Names in Pop Culture
In comparison, the Argentine Dogo is not as well-known as other big dog breeds such as Pit Bulls or Bulldogs. However, it has gained some recognition in a few films and television series, particularly in its home country of Argentina. One of the most popular films that feature an Argentine Dogo in a starring role is the 2004 film El Perro, or Bombon in English. The titular character, Bombon, refers to an Argentine Dogo. The film is set in Patagonia and revolves around a man whose life is turned around after receiving a dog from a woman.
The main character in the film is Coco, who is a skilled craftsman who makes and sells knives. During the opening of the film, he is trying to sell his handcrafted knives to some oil workers. While his work is exceptional, the workers could not afford his knives. Coco lives with his daughter and her kids in a small, cramped apartment. Being 52 years of age, he is broke and down on his luck, believing that he has no chance to be employed at such a late age. In addition, he is unable to sell any of his knives as the film goes on.
Despite being unlucky, Coco remains a helpful and warmhearted man. One day, he helped a stranded woman after her car broke down. As repayment for the act of kindness shown by Coco, the woman gave him a purebred Argentine Dogo. The woman also gives all the supporting documents for the dog. While initially perplexed, Coco decides to keep the dog.
After receiving and deciding to keep the dog, named Bombon, Cocoโs life starts to turn around. He starts to work as a guard, along with his dog, for buildings. Also, he unintentionally meets a dog trainer named Walter through one of his jobs. Walter informs Coco of how valuable Bombon is and helps him win third prize in a dog show. Walter also asks to take Bombon back to his ranch and put him out for stud services. At first, Coco agrees but then he realizes that he does not want to be without Bombon. He looks for Bombon and finds him mating with a stray dog. At the end of the film, he sets off with Bombon with hope for a positive future.
El Perro is one of the handful of works featuring the Argentine Dogo. The breed has also made an appearance in the television series' entitled Ray Donovan and Pit Boss.
Argentine Dogo Dog Name Considerations
Argentine Dogos are a powerful and loyal dog breed that can bring a lot of joy to their new owner. As such, your new pooch deserves a name that will suit its many lovely qualities. One of the things to remember when naming your new dog is to try and keep the name short. Most, if not all dogs can only remember the first few syllables of a word. Hence, it is pretty useless to give a long name for your dog, no matter how fancy or unique they sound. Instead, go for a meaningful name that has only one to two syllables, or up to a maximum of three. If you have a name idea that is longer than this that you really want to give to your dog, it would be a good idea to come up with a shortened version of it. This can serve as your dogโs nickname.
Another tip would be to take the many qualities of your dog and use it as an inspiration for a name. Some of the most striking characteristics of an Argentine Dogo include its muscular build, white coat, athleticism, hunting skills and an extreme loyalty to their owners. Any of these attributes can help you brainstorm for a suitable name. Also, since the breed is from Argentina, you may choose a local Spanish name or anything that relates to the Argentine culture as a name for your dog.
