Introduction
The Australian Terrier is a small, robust terrier that is self-confident and full of spunk. If you are looking for a hardy terrier, this is the breed for you; they love to dig, chase small animals and play with their toys. These little dogs are very energetic and but do not always do well in a home with multiple dogs. While the Australian Terrier is not the most popular dog in the United States, they have gained popularity and are becoming easier to find. It is a big decision to add a puppy to your home and you should thoroughly research a breed before deciding. After you have picked the Australian Terrier for your new dog, the next step is to choose a name that will suit your new pup.
Australian Terrier Dog Names In Pop Culture
Freehold, New Jersey native, Ted Sutphen owner of Kangaroo Kennels, has discovered an intense love for dog shows and he finds that the adrenaline rush he gets from stepping into the ring with his Australian Terrier, Sandy, is just as intense as playing a contact sport. Sutphen has found that aside from the competition in the ring, he also enjoys getting to know other dog enthusiasts that enjoy showing their dogs. While not all exhibitors are friendly, there are still those that are there for the simple enjoyment of being involved in a dog show. Sutphen never expected to develop such an interest in dog shows. He works in the asphalt road contracting business and never had an interest in learning about the dog show world. All that changed when he began searching for his next companion. Having formerly owned Basset Hounds, Sutphen started searching for a smaller breed that was just as hardy as the Basset Hound. That is why he started looking into the Norwich Terrier. But a photo of a terrier owned by a Point Pleasant, New Jersey couple caught his attention and he was soon interested in the dog that was in the photo. That dog was an Australian Terrier named Pleasant Pastures Sir Sandy or Sandy for short. Sandy has since earned his championship. Sutphen has plans to keep competing with Sandy to earn his grand championship. Sutphen has another Australian Terrier that he was showing named Champion Tinnee Town Typesetter who has since been retired from the show ring. Typesetter was imported from Australia. Sandy is the only dog that Sutphen is currently showing and Sandy has several big wins under his belt including being the only Australian Terrier to win the Terrier Group, doing so twice; once at the Winston Salem, North Carolina shows and once at the Greenville, South Caroline shows. Sandy also made a trip to Puerto Rico where he became the first Australian Terrier to be shown in that country.
Judy the Australian Terrier has quickly become an internet sensation. Every morning her owner starts their day with a bit of yoga and Judy has learned also to do yoga to get her day going. Judy does need her owner’s help to get ready for her morning yoga session. Instead, Judy rolls out her own mat and then begins her stretches. People have become mesmerized with Judy and watch her perform stretches that most humans cannot do and then ends each yoga session with a full paw-stand, which she can do with ease and grace.
Australian Terrier Dog Name Considerations
Once you have committed to adding an Australian Terrier to your family, you will need to start thinking of a name that is unique, maybe a bit quirky and perhaps pays homage to their native Australia. While many Australian names are similar to names here in North America, there are aboriginal names that are indeed unique and would be a good choice for your new terrier. Names such as Tumai, Joozhar, Olja, and Cra are not names you would necessarily hear at the local dog park; but all have strong Australian roots. These names may be a bit too much for you and you could instead look for names that are Australian but do sound more like names you are used to such as Joosua, Jimmi, Luu, Elsea, and Nansy. Make sure you include the entire family in the naming decision if your new Australian Terrier is meant to be a family dog. If this is solely your dog, then the naming decision should most likely be your sole responsibility. Whoever is naming your new family member, take your time and try out a few names you like to see which one sounds the best. It may be that one name simply rolls off the tongue easier than any others. This name will stay with your dog for their life and will be a name you carry in your heart for the rest of yours.
