Introduction
The Austrian Brandlbracke is not the right dog for everyone; they are a specialized hunting dog with a unique personality and should only be considered by experienced dog handlers. The Austrian Brandlbracke is not aggressive, but is a determined, work-centered breed and requires a significant amount of exercise and training. Most Austrian Brandlbrackes are not kept as pets but are solely used for hunting purposes. They are known by other names as well including the Austrian Black and Tan Hound and the Osterreichischer Glat Thaariger Bracke. Because of their unsuitability for family situations, the Austrian Brandlbracke has seen their population dwindle and are in danger of becoming extinct.
Austrian Brandlbracke Dog Names In Pop Culture
Since there are so few Austrian Brandlbrackes left, even in their native country, most people do not know a thing about the breed and would not know one if they saw one in person or in print. The Austrian Brandlbracke does closely resemble the Black and Tan Coonhound and some researchers believe the two breeds do share a Celtic hound as an ancestor. Unlike the Austrian Brandlbracke, there are still glimpses of the Black and Tan Coonhound in commercials and movies, such as The Duke, a British-Canadian film released in 1999. Hubert, a Black and Tan Coonhound stars in the lead role. Hubert inherited his master’s Scottish mansion. Charlotte, the niece of the butler is named Hubert’s guardian and helps thwart the evil plans of greedy relatives who want the mansion and fortune. The Black and Tan Coonhound was used in this lovable family film because of their easy-going nature and trainability. The Austrian Brandlbracke is, unfortunately, a more prey-driven breed and while they do well with children, they must have more intense training than their Coonhound cousins. The Austrian Brandlbracke has not evolved from the intense scent hound they were originally bred as into a sedentary family companion.
The Austrian Brandlbracke’s history is somewhat muddied with many researchers claiming the breed dates back about 150 years, however, other researchers claim the Austrian Brandlbracke has been around much longer and was a favorite hound of Austrian nobility. It is believed the Austrian Brandlbracke was exclusively kept by nobility and it was illegal for commoners to possess an Austrian Brandlbracke with harsh penalties imposed on those who broke this law. The Austrian Brandlbracke is well-known in Austria; however, due to the intensity of their hunting natures, they are becoming less and less popular as more people steer away from sport hunting. In other parts of the world, the Austrian Brandlbracke is virtually unknown. The Austrian Brandlbracke was originally bred to be a skilled hunter of a wide array of game but their specialty is fox and rabbit since they are known for their silent hunting style instead of the harsh bray loosed by the Coonhound or other scent hounds. The Austrian Brandlbracke is commonly used in high altitude areas where other hounds would tire from the change in altitude. The breed is more commonly known as the Austrian Black and Tan Hound by enthusiasts outside of Austria and is most renowned for their agile movements and flowing gait; something most hounds lack.
Austrian Brandlbracke Dog Name Considerations
If you do decide to add an Austrian Brandlbracke to your family, be prepared to spend a large amount of time with your new puppy. They will require a significant amount of exercise, training, and socialization. This is not a breed that will be happy lounging at your feet while you watch television and they will not do well being banished to a backyard with limited human interaction. Because the Austrian Brandlbracke is a rare breed, even in their native Austria, you may have to search quite a while before you find a breeder. Once your new Austrian Brandlbracke has come home it will be time to find the right name for your new family member. Being an Austrian breed, you may want to begin your search by looking into Austrian or German names so you can honor their history. There are several names, such as Hubert, that are easy to pronounce and are not so foreign sounding that you have to explain your name choice to everyone you meet. However, if you are looking for a name that is a little outside-the-box and not a typical dog name, there are plenty of choices that have Austrian or German roots, including Torkel, Drexel, Catinka, and Fenja.
