Playfully known as “Einie”, Einstein is a Catalan sheepdog and Doc’s constant companion. He is the latest of Doc’s dogs, having replaced his old dog, Copernicus. Like most of Doc’s dogs, he was also named after a scientist. In his case, he was named after genius and Doc’s personal hero, Albert Einstein. Even though Doc liked to conduct his experiments on Einstein and often used him as his “guinea pig”, Doc had true care and compassion for his buddy and would never put him in any risk or danger.

When Marty and Doc first got together, Einstein immediately took a liking to Marty. Einstein was in the parking lot of Twin Pines Mall when Doc first tried out his time travel experiment. When Doc built the DeLorean time machine, he first put it to the test with the help of Einstein. Using a remote to control the time machine with Einstein inside, he was able to successfully send the dog one minute into the future. Being a dog, Einstein was oblivious to what just took place and happily went on with his life.

Einstein has proven his worth to Doc and Marty on more than one occasion. During the time travel experiment in the mall’s parking lot, Einstein barked to warn Doc of the incoming Libyan terrorists. He was also used by Marty to track Jennifer through her purse, which Einstein used to track the scent. Throughout the first film, Einstein was left behind in a kennel while Marty traveled back in time and complete his mission. After the mission was accomplished and all was in order, Doc traveled to 1985 to be with his family. He also picked up Einstein from his lab and was taken in by the family as their household dog.

Einstein is a memorable character in the film franchise and had an integral role in all three films. He was also the perfect example of a loyal dog who would always be by their master’s side.
