Introduction
Baseball Related Dog Names in Pop Culture
The term Ace, in baseball, refers to the star pitcher on the team. The Ace is a starting pitcher, a position that is arguably the most crucial in baseball. It is said that good pitching is the way to win, especially in the Post Season. Ace doesn't always refer to a pitcher and can be used to describe anyone or anything at the top, like an ace pilot or the Ace of Spades. Many times, dogs are named Ace as well. One of the most famous Ace dogs in pop culture is the Ace the Bat Hound from the DC Comics. Ace was a German Shepherd who first appears in the 1955 Batman #92 issue. Ace, the Bat Hound, joined the Caped Crusader, Batman, and his partner, Robin, in stopping crime in Gotham City for several decades.
Ace, the Bat Hound, was most likely not a reference to the baseball Ace, but dogs and baseball are very much a part of pop culture. Minor League teams often bear the names Diamond Dogs and slang terms like Dirt Dogs are used to describe some teams, like the infamous Boston Red Sox. Many dogs are also used as mascots and bat dogs. One Double-A Minor League team, the Trenton Thunder, keeps Golden Retrievers as bat dogs for its home games. Unlike Ace the Bat Hound, these Golden Retrievers are baseball bat dogs. The Trenton Thunder is a Double-A team for the New York Yankees, and its Golden Retriever bat dogs have gained worldwide attention. Chase was a Golden Retriever mascot and bat dog for the Trenton Thunder who was so well-loved that he was honored with a nickname, "That Golden Thunder." Nicknames are just as important to baseball players and fan alike as is superstition. Unfortunately, Chase passed away in 2013. However, the Trenton Thunder team loves its Golden Retriever mascots and has the dynamic duo, Derby, and Rookie, on staff for home games. Derby, named after the baseball term, "Home Run Derby," will bring water to the umpires and plays Frisbee during game breaks. Rookie, true to his name, sometimes gets excited and retrieves the baseball from the pitcher's hand rather than the bat from the field. The Golden Retriever's genes make this breed so great in the role of bat dog. The Golden Retriever was bred to retrieve birds and waterfowl, so this breed never uses its teeth on the baseballs or bats.
