Introduction
Dog Names Ending in 'er' in Pop Culture
Popular culture is full of famous dogs with names ending in "er," and the number of possibilities seem endless for this theme. Examples of famous dogs in this theme come from television and literature and even American political pop culture. Tiger is one such example that falls into multiple categories. You don't often equate a dog's name with Tiger, given its big cat associations but the name Tiger has been given to a few dogs in pop culture. Most people are familiar with the poetic genius that was Edgar Allen Poe, but some may not be aware that he wrote a novel during his career. The novel, called The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket tells the story and spiritual journey of a young man who stowed away on a whaling ship that suffered a mutiny. Aboard the ship was Pym's faithful dog, named Tiger. Tiger helps Pym and a few other men retake the ship and continue their journey. Unfortunately, after helping restore the ship, the fate of Tiger is unknown, and he is not mentioned in the book again. The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket was first published in 1838 and still confounds readers and critics alike.
Tiger as a dog's name was also used by a television dog actor of the same name. The Brady's kept a dog named Tiger in the 1960s and 1970s television show, The Brady Bunch. Tiger only appeared in a number of shows in the first two seasons before disappearing from the show. However, Tiger's doghouse remained a part of the set for the entirety of the show.
Some dogs in pop culture do not share the literary or Hollywood limelight as both Tiger's did but the political limelight. America President Lyndon B. Johnson was in the White House between 1963 and 1969. Like many American Presidents before and after him, Johnson kept a presidential pooch. Johnson's chosen breed was the Beagle, and he kept a pair he loved faithfully. Of the pair, Her is a featured famous dog with a name ending in "er." Apparently, President Johnson was not known for his choice of names as the male sibling to Her was Him and both were sired by a Beagle named Beagle. However, when you are a statesman, and the President of the United States, you can give your Beagle any name you like. Despite the laughs President Johnson's Beagle names gave, the dogs were well-loved and cared for by the President who brought them out for tea parties, State dinners, and press meetings as well as daily walks on the White House grounds. Unfortunately, Her passed away at an early age, and still while President Johnson was in office.
