Bavarian Mountain Scent Hound Dog Names

Despite their unique and loveable characteristics, Bavarian Mountain Scent Hounds have not gained as much worldwide recognition compared to other German dog breeds, such as the German Shepherd, Great Dane and Doberman, to name a few. As a matter of fact, there is only one mainstream film wherein the Bavarian Mountain Scent Hound was featured, albeit in a starring role. This is in the 2012 Austrian-German movie The Wall, starring actress Martina Gedeck.

The Wall is a film adaptation of the 1963 novel entitled Die Wand, by Austrian author Marlen Haushofer. The movie’s plot is centered on a woman who visits a hunting lodge located in the Austrian Alps with her friends who finds herself separated from them via a mysterious invisible wall. The Wall became Austria’s entry for the category of “Best Foreign Language Film” during the 86^th Academy Awards.

The film starts with an unnamed woman venturing with her two friends, Luise and Hugo, and their dog, a Bavarian Mountain Scent Hound named Lynx, to a remote hunting lodge in the Alps. Wanting something to drink, the woman’s friends check out the nearby village to look for a pub, leaving her behind with their loyal dog. The morning after, the woman is unable to find her friends and realizes that they did not return to the lodge. She decides to go to the village with Lynx in tow, but she is prevented by an invisible wall. After trying to get through the unseen barrier multiple times, the woman decides to make her way back to the lodge. On her way back, she sees a farmhouse and makes her way towards it but is again stopped by an invisible wall.

After returning in the lodge, the woman starts to panic and feel despair because of her isolation. As she explores the area, she finds a cow, whom she names Bella. With nothing else to do with her time and having to find ways to survive, the woman starts planting potatoes and taking in other animals to care for. She also marks the days in the calendar in order to keep track of time.

During this ordeal, she considers her dog Lynx as her only friend, one who’s always with her and comforting her. She experiences nearly 3 years of changing seasons – one day enjoying the summer sun and in other days, freezing in the snow. As she starts to become detached from reality, she encounters a strange man who kills some of her animals, including Lynx. She shoots the man using his rifle. The ending is a bit of a cliffhanger, with winter arriving and the woman running out of paper to write her “report” on.

Although Lynx suffered a tragic ending in the film, the Bavarian Mountain Scent Hound’s unwavering loyalty was highlighted throughout the movie. Moreover, given the film’s popularity in Austria and Germany, the hound became a more beloved breed within these regions.
