Introduction
Best 7-Letter Dog Names in Pop Culture
Hachiko was a dog of the Akita breed born in 1923 on a farm near the city of Odate, Japan. Every morning he would walk with his owner to the train station. The owner would take the train into work, then return each evening. Sadly, one day the dog's owner had a cerebral hemorrhage and didn't return, yet Hachiko continued to wait for the rest of his life (nine years, nine months and fifteen days) for his owner to return. Each day the dog would wait at Shibuya Station, and he became famous for his outstanding loyalty. At first he was considered a nuisance, but then commuters got to know the dog and would look out for him and they would bring him food and water to nourish him while he waited. Articles written about the dog made him a celebrity, but all Hachiko wanted was the return of his master.
Year after year his devotion never waned. When he died, a bronze statue was erected in his honor and the station entrance near the statue is now called the Hachiko-guchi which means The Hachiko Entrance. A movie was made of the dog's loyalty, and it was called Hachi: A Dog's Tale. After Hachiko's death his remains were cremated and the ashes were buried in Aoyama Cemetery, Tokyo where they rest beside those of his beloved master. What a sad and moving story that highlights the capacity of loyalty and love that dogs have for their people.
Dogs are such amazing creatures; another dog that found herself to be a hero was Roselle. She helped save her owner's life in the World Trade Center disaster in September 2011. Stuck on the 78th floor, in a smoke choked atmosphere and rocking building, Roselle led her owner Michael through the crumbling building and to safety. Although panting with extreme thirst, the dog managed to reach safety just moments before Tower 1 collapsed. This is typical of dogs who never think of their own self interest, only of their loyalty and devotion to their people.
There are many dog heroes, superstars and such, but just as many normal loving dogs who make daily life fun and full of love for their owners, with their silly antics that make us laugh, or their quiet comforting support when we are down. The dog is an amazing animal with a large heart and compassionate nature.
