World War 1 was a terrible time in our collective history. It was a dark period for all people, and even the animals were affected by this horrific war. But there is one good thing that came out of the war. On a battlefield, US troop Lee Duncan, rescued five German Shepherd puppies. He gave three away, and kept two. He named them after Rin Tin Tin and Nanette, which were good luck charms that the French children gave to the soldiers.

Unfortunately, Nanette died from pneumonia, after she and her brother were trained by a woman who trained police dogs. Lee decided that Rin Tin Tin, or Rinty, would be wonderful on film, and would take Rinty for walks in Hollywood, asking anyone to give him a part, no matter how small. His perseverance worked, and Rinty was given a few small parts in several different films.

His big break came when he was given a starring role in the film, “Where the North Begins” alongside famous actress, Claire Adams. Rin Tin Tin played his part brilliantly, and the film was an instant success. The film did so well that it has been accredited with saving Warner Bros. from bankruptcy. Rin Tin Tin became known as the “mortgage lifter”. He was wildly popular, and Duncan signed him up for more films and his dog was offered endorsement deals. By 1927, Rin Tin Tin was one of the most recognizable actors in the world, and had a dedicated fan base. He even sent autographs (paw prints) to his fans.

When the first Oscar competition was announced, people voted Rin Tin Tin as their favorite actor, but the academy wanted to appear more serious, so the award went to a human actor instead. In time, Rin Tin Tin and Nanette II (Nanette’s replacement) had at least 48 puppies. Some of these puppies were adopted by influential people in the industry, such as Greta Garbo, W.K. Kellogg and Jean Harlow. Eventually, Rin Tin Tin died on the eve of August 10, 1932. Newspapers published obituaries, and with like most famous deaths, there were a few strange rumors that circulated. The dog was so beloved by the public that video memorials were played in cinemas, and regular broadcasting was interrupted by an announcement of his death. In 1960, he was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. To this day, his legacy is felt.
