Introduction
The Bolognese is a cousin to the Bichon Frise and is also a solid white, fluffy small breed dog. These little dogs are stocky and tend to be devoted to their family. They originated in Northern Italy and are thought of as serene lap dogs that are not very active. The Bolognese was a royal dog that was given as gifts to visiting nobles. The Bolognese is shy towards people they do not know, but with proper socialization will quickly warm up to strangers. They are prone to separation anxiety and are not well suited for busy families where they will be left alone for multiple hours every day.
Bolognese Dog Names In Pop Culture
The Bolognese is a rare breed within North America. Linda of Snow White Bolognese located in Michigan is one of only a handful of breeders in Canada and the United States. Her first Bolognese puppy was named Bella and this loyal, loving, little companion became the love of her life. When searching for a new puppy, Linda had to a list of must-haves that included non-shedding, non-barky, and hypoallergenic. It took about a year of researching the various breeds before Linda stumbled upon the Bolognese and then it took another year before she was able to actually get her new puppy. Because the Bolognese is a rare breed, Linda had to be put on a waiting list and place a deposit to hold a future puppy. This is not uncommon since there are so few breeders within North America. Importing a Bolognese puppy from Europe is a possibility, but can be pricey and cause a lot of headaches.
Bella arrived after a ten-hour flight. Bella was calm and sweet, never showing any signs of stress or impatience at having been kenneled on an airplane for so long. She calmly sat on Linda’s lap during the drive home from the airport and the rest was history. Bella quickly adapted to Linda’s schedule and was not a demanding puppy. She learned quickly what was expected of her and became Linda’s little shadow. As Bella grew and matured, Linda became even more enamored with the breed. She decided that she wanted to breed Bolognese dogs. Therefore, her search for other top quality Bolognese began to compliment her Bella. Snow White Bolognese was born and Linda has never looked back. Linda began importing Bolognese from their native Italy and found an experienced breeder to act as her mentor, educating her in how to read pedigrees and research bloodlines. Today, she has a small home based kennel and only breeds Bolognese. She promotes this small breed as hypoallergenic, non-shedding, and eager to please you. The Bolognese also is not a barky dog and does well in condos or apartments. Linda is a member of the American Rare Breed Association (ARBA) and the Bolognese Breed Association of America (BBA). The Bolognese is not recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC), but is recognized by the United Kennel Club (UKC). There are not enough Bolognese being bred within the United States for the breed to qualify for the AKC Foundation Stock Service, the first step toward becoming an AKC recognized breed.
Bolognese Dog Name Considerations
When you tell people you have a Bolognese dog, expect to get some blank stares or confused looks. Not to be confused with Bolognese sauce, a meat-based sauce used in some Italian cuisine, the Bolognese dog is a small, white, fluffy lapdog. Bringing home a Bolognese puppy will be the biggest challenge because they are a rare breed. However, once your new puppy is home, it will be time to find the perfect name for your new hypoallergenic companion. The Bolognese originated in northern Italy, in the town of Bologna, and it would only seem natural to look for names steeped in Italian tradition such as Enzo, Fabrizio, or Vita. Even though this breed is not necessarily active, you will still be out and about in your neighborhood with your new puppy so be sure to avoid naming your new puppy a name that is similar to other dogs in your area. Also, avoid choosing a name that sounds similar to common commands that you will be using in their training. Take some time and get to know your new puppy when they come home before picking their name, sometimes a name will come to you as you learn more about their personality.
