Introduction
The Carolina Dog, also sometimes called the Carolina Dingo, is a primitive breed that originated in the United States. There are still Carolina Dogs living wild around the Georgia-South Carolina border. These dogs have been found in the wild as far as Arizona and Pennsylvania and Ohio. The Carolina Dog is wary of strangers and it takes them a while to warm up to people. They are pack animals and are most comfortable in a home that has more than one dog. This is not a fully domesticated breed; therefore, they are do require a strong leader in the home. The Carolina Dog generally does well with children and other pets.
Carolina Dog Names In Pop Culture
Even though the Carolina Dog is a primitive breed and has been in existence for hundreds of years, it can be somewhat difficult to find an authentic Carolina Dog. There are many of these dogs still living feral in the southwest and have even been seen as far west as Arizona. The American Kennel Club has accepted the Carolina Dog into its Foundation Stock Service (AKC FSS) and the United Kennel Club (UKC) and the American Rare Breed Association (ARBA) have allowed them to compete in their events. There are few actual breeders of the Carolina Dog and many times when these dogs are found in shelters, they are listed under a different breed or breeds.
Despite the Carolina Dog being virtually unknown, Star or Champion Banbury Cross Glory Be, has been cleaning up at UKC and ARBA conformation shows. Star is a dual conformation champion with the UKC and ARBA, and has even earned his Master Championship with the ARBA. In December of 2000, Star was the first Carolina Dog to be ranked in the ARBA’s top ten, he finished the year as the sixth ranked dog within the ARBA. Aside from being a rising star in the conformation ring, Star also competed in the obedience ring and earned his obedience title through the UKC; he also won an obedience title through the Australian Shepherd Club of America (ASCA). Star has earned agility titles through the United States Dog Agility Association (USDAA) and the North American Dog Agility Council (NADAC). He was also a masterful herding dog and earned titles through the American Herding Breed Association (AHBA) for herding both ducks and sheep. When Star was not enjoying his time performing in dog sports, he was earning his Canine Good Citizenship certification, Temperament Test certification, and Delta Society Therapy certification. Star was bred by Jane Gunnell and is co-owned with Rick Lancaster. Star was even an excellent producer with three of his offspring earning several canine performance and show titles.
Jane Gunnell also has another ARBA Champion and Master Champion in her kennel. Champion Lady’s Palace Saigon of Banbury, or Saigon for short, even won Best Puppy in Show at just four months old at an ARBA all-breed conformation show in Dallas, Texas. Saigon was the first Carolina Dog puppy to earn a Best Puppy in Show at an ARBA show. Saigon also earned her ARBA herding title and Canine Good Citizenship title. Saigon is co-owned by Jane Gunnell and Jackie Lancaster.
Carolina Dog Name Considerations
Because the Carolina Dog is not well-known, there are many dogs that are pure Carolina Dog sitting in shelters within the southeastern states, especially in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia that are mismarked as other breeds or mixes of other breeds. If you are unable to find a Carolina Dog breeder, research the characteristics of the breed and start visiting shelters, looking for those characteristics. Once you have found your new Carolina Dog to love, it will be time to search for the right name that will fit their personality.
When you start looking for a name, you will want to steer clear of names that sound very similar to command words you will be using in their training. You will also want to avoid using names that sound similar to other names being used within the family. It would be confusing to have your child and your dog having names that sound very similar. Finally, take some time to get to know your new Carolina Dog and let them help find their new name. A dog with a strong personality could be named Alpha which means dominant or having leadership qualities. A spirited or playful girl could be named Moxie meaning having spirited energy or great nerve.
