Lovers of Disney movies will remember the iconic white cat Duchess, the mama cat in the charming movie The AristoCats. Duchess, who is a white Turkish Van, finds herself and her kittens Marie (also white), Berlioz, and Toulouse abandoned by a nasty butler far from their home in Paris. Based on a true 1910 story about a fur-mily of cats in Paris that inherited a fortune, this film has a little something for everyone. Duchess reigns as the resolute, regal feline entitled to the luxurious life they almost lost.

Edgar the butler has learned that his mistress plans to leave the cats her money and estate, keeping him on hand to pamper them. In return, when the kitties pass on, Edgar will inherit it all. The impatient butler schemes to hurry that process up by kidnapping Duchess and her brood and leaving them somewhere remote, assuming they’ll never find their way home. But Edgar underestimated the feline matriarch’s ingenuity, and her loyal and resourceful animal friends.

Duchess, flawlessly voiced by Eva Gabor, is fearless as the group struggles to find their way home in spite of Edgar’s plot to kidnap them a second time. She even finds time to become romantic with Thomas O’Malley, a rough tomcat who helps them get home. Their lingering looks and flirty gestures aren’t welcomed by the three kitten siblings, and they make plans to drive a wedge between Tom and their mother, with very funny results.

The central Duchess character combines beauty, gentleness, humor, and no-nonsense common sense as she leads her brood on this adventure. She’s paw-fectly drawn as a pampered white cat who never fur-gets where she and her family belong.

Entertaining, adventurous, and hilarious, the film featured a remarkable song named Everybody Wants to Be a Cat, sung by the legendary French actor and singer Maurice Chevalier.
