The Caucasian Ovcharka, also known as the Caucasian Shepherd, is a big, Molosser dog breed that is prominent in the Caucasus region, comprised of Russia, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia. The Ovcharka (which means “sheepdog” in Russian) is believed to have existed as early as the 1900s. Due to the fact that the USSR was the first to register the breed, Ovcharkas are considered native to the USSR. However, they are most prominent in the country of Georgia. Loyal, protective and brave, Ovcharkas are not known to back down from a fight, especially when defending their owners. Although the breed has some aggressive tendencies, they can become excellent watchdogs and home companions through proper training and ample socialization.
