Introduction
The Caucasian Ovcharka, also known as the Caucasian Shepherd, is a big, Molosser dog breed that is prominent in the Caucasus region, comprised of Russia, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia. The Ovcharka (which means โsheepdogโ in Russian) is believed to have existed as early as the 1900s. Due to the fact that the USSR was the first to register the breed, Ovcharkas are considered native to the USSR. However, they are most prominent in the country of Georgia. Loyal, protective and brave, Ovcharkas are not known to back down from a fight, especially when defending their owners. Although the breed has some aggressive tendencies, they can become excellent watchdogs and home companions through proper training and ample socialization.
Caucasian Ovcharka Dog Names in Pop Culture
Because of its status as a fairly rare breed, the Caucasian Ovcharka has very little exposure in terms of pop culture works. As a matter of fact, Ovcharkas are not that popular outside of the Caucasus region; those who are familiar with the breed are either locals or enthusiasts. Even with its beauty, the Ovcharka remains to be an unknown breed. However, there is one foreign film that features the dog breed in a starring role โ the 2008 Finnish movie entitled Myrsky.
Directed by Kaisa Rastimo, Myrsky (or known as Stormheart internationally) is a childrenโs drama film about the strong bond and unconditional friendship formed between a Finnish girl and a dog, which happens to be a Caucasian Ovcharka. The film, which was set in 1989, starts with a man who was visiting the Berlin Wall, which was close to crumbling. In his visit to East Berlin, he comes across a puppy and, despite not having any knowledge about the puppyโs origin, decided to bring him home to his daughters in Finland.
Upon coming home, one of the daughters, a seven-year-old named Pearl, takes an instant liking to the puppy, whom the family named Stormheart. Soon enough, Pearl starts to build a strong connection to the new family dog as the two learn to mutually trust each other. Eventually, Pearl and Stormheart become best of friends, being virtually inseparable. Also, during this period, the father slowly starts to piece together Stormheartโs life when he discovers that the parents of Stormheart were previously serving as watchdogs at the Berlin Wall. After the Berlin Wall collapsed, Stormheartโs parents were shot down.
Having no knowledge of Stormheartโs breed, it came as a shock to the family when Stormheart grows to about the size of a bear six months after he was adopted. More than his gigantic size, Stormheartโs behavior has become a problem, having no concept of boundaries, rules and control. Stormheart starts to display the typical issues exhibited by the breed, such as aggression and overprotectiveness. Despite the difficult and overbearing personality and lack of grace displayed by Stormheart, he is good-natured and means well. Moreover, he has proven to be loyal to Pearl and he has protected her from any possible danger or harm. In return, Pearl has given love and affection to Stormheart.
The story of Stormheart and Pearl is a heartwarming tale about an unlikely friendship that has withstood many challenges. The film also helped paint the Ovcharka in a good light and exhibited the breedโs loyalty and loving nature.
Caucasian Ovcharka Dog Name Considerations
So, youโve decided to get a Caucasian Ovcharka as a pet? Great. However, choosing the type of dog you want is half the battle; now comes the more difficult part: choosing an appropriate name for your new pooch. The Caucasian Ovcharka is a rare breed to own as a pet and it is only fitting that you come up with a name that equals the breedโs uniqueness. When brainstorming for a name for an Ovcharka, or any other dog breed for that matter, there are a few things that you have to take into consideration.
A good, foolproof way of choosing a name for your dog is to look at their attributes. In the case of an Ovcharka, the breed is known for its powerful and muscular build and a big, wedge-shaped head. Ovcharkas are also covered in a thick, furry coat that comes in a variety of colors, including gray, red, fawn, brindle, white and cream. They also have a fierce temperament and known for their strong, protective personality. These characteristics may be used as inspiration for a name.
Another great option would be to choose names related to the breedโs country of origin. Ovcharkas are officially native to Russia, so a Russian name or anything related to Russiaโs culture would be a good fit. Names from the Caucasus region will also work, given that the Ovcharka is prominent in this area.Male Caucasian Ovcharka Dog Names
