Although the Danish Swedish Farmdog strongly resembles the Jack Russell Terrier, it has been determined that he is not a terrier at all. His name would suggest that he is a sheepdog or some such herding breed. However, this is not right either. The Danish Swedish Farmdog has been classified as a pinscher! This versatile farm dog that can do almost anything is a fun-loving, active and intelligent pinscher. He has obtained American Kennel Club (AKC) status but is still definitely a rare breed that most people do not know a thing about. Those people who know the breed and have learned all they can about them will know Suzy. Suzy is the Danish Swedish Farmdog featured on the Danish Swedish Farmdog Club of America, Inc website under the herding section. This black and white Danish Swedish Farmdog’s herding story is highlighted. There are not many Danish Swedish Farmdogs participating in herding trials simply because there are not many of them within the United States. Therefore, Suzy’s successful training is fun to watch. She is a go-getter and obviously loves the job given to her.

The main purpose of Suzy going through herding training was to determine her natural herding style and instinct. Every herding breed has a different style or way of controlling a herd and handling unruly livestock. The Danish Swedish Farmdog, being a rare breed, does not have enough documentation published on their actual herding style. Suzy, you could say, was used as a guinea pig to help people better understand the Danish Swedish Farmdog breed.

Videos were compiled and have been posted online of Suzy working with sheep. She seems more than capable of handling the sheep as they meander through the field. Suzy has learned how to wear the sheep. In other words, Suzy moves from side to side behind the flock of sheep to keep all the sheep gathered and moving in a forward direction. Without Suzy behind the flock, moving them forward, the sheep would be scattering throughout the field. Her lessons have been well documented to share within the Danish Swedish Farmdog community. Hopefully, breed enthusiasts will begin seeing more and more Danish Swedish Farmdog’s in herding competitions. To say that Suzy is somewhat of a celebrity among fans of the Danish Swedish Farmdog may be a bit of a stretch but the work that she is doing along with her owner is helping people realize that this breed is still as versatile as they were originally bred.
