Introduction

Running from 2006 to September 2013, the Showtime series Dexter was the television embodiment of a character created by author Jeff Lindsay. Dexter, the lead character, is a blood spatter analyst by day and a serial killer by night. Dexter, traumatized by the murder of his mother, which he witnessed first-hand, is adopted by the police officer who found him submerged in blood. As Dexter grows into manhood, his adoptive father, Harry, begins to see the darkness in Dexter. Harry begins teaching Dexter how to literally get away with murder; however, Dexter must commit to only killing men that he confirms are linked to despicable crimes. In this way, Dexter becomes a hero of sorts. The dark hero became a fan favorite, and the show is quite popular on Netflix. Many fans see Dexter as a hero, and may want to honor their fandom by naming their favorite four-legged companion after a character on the show.

Dexter Dog Name Considerations

Even though viewers know that Dexter is a cold-blooded killer, his desire to only do harm to those whom he can prove are truly evil makes Dexter a folk hero in a sense. He could be described as a vigilante of sorts. Throughout history, people such as Billy the Kid have become romanticized. Batman is a comic book superhero, yet he is also merely operating as a vigilante. Dexter is trained by his adoptive father, Harry, to fully vet potential victims. Viewers come to feel a kinship with Dexter, not because he is a killer, but because he rids his world of evil-doing "bad guys."

Of course, Dexter must have evil opponents, and there is a laundry list of hardened criminals which serve as formidable opponents of our hero. Names such as Trinity, Rudy, Travis, and Chase represent just a few of Dexter's enemies. Because these names represent strong characters with a dark side, these names might fit a large dog known for toughness, such as a Pit Bull Terrier or a Rottweiler.

Of course, if you like the heroines of the series, you could always stick with Deb, Lumen, or Rita. These names would fit any four-legged female canine companion. Dexter and Deb's family name, Morgan, fits any sweet canine friend. Whatever name you choose from the Dexter series, as a fan, you can't go wrong.
