Introduction
Disney Villain Dog Names in Pop Culture
Some of the most famous dogs with Disney villain names were villainous Disney dogs in the animated features. Roscoe and Desoto are among the top named Disney dog villains of all time given their thug nature and desire to eat Oliver, a stray kitten. Roscoe and Desoto were two Doberman Pinscher thugs who belonged to Mr. Sykes, the loan shark in the animated feature. The movie is Disney's retelling of Charles Dickens's Oliver Twist but takes place in New York City in what is, presumably, modern day at the time, the 1980's. The animated film has many stereotypes commonly developed against New York and boasts big names including Billy Joel, Bette Midler, Cheech Marin, and Dom DeLuise. However, one of the unfortunate representations is in Roscoe and Desoto as thug Dobermans. Doberman Pinschers had developed a bad reputation in New York City during the 1970's. Many people bred and overbred these dogs to be symbols of threat and thuggery. While the overbreeding and ill-treatment of some Doberman Pinschers may fit this description, the breed is considered a loyal, energetic, and loving one. Doberman Pinschers are obedient and watchful, thus they make for good guard dogs, but naturally aggressive, they are not. The Doberman Pinscher suffered, like the German Shepherd, the Rottweiler, and now the Pit Bull breeds do, as a feared dog in pop culture. The names Roscoe and Desoto, if anyone recalls the vicious animated Dobermans from the film, will give the impression of power and protection in your home.
The bad but not quite evil Georgette also comes from the same movie, Oliver, and Company. Georgette is a French Poodle and a Champion at that. She is not so much evil as she is vain and conceited. Her actions lead to Oliver's removal from the house and eventually, the kidnapping of Jenny Foxworth, the story's little girl. Thankfully, Georgette is redeemed in the end and proves that even a prissy, high maintenance pooch like her can find love and friendship in the most unlikely of places.
Finally, one of the oldest Disney villains to bear a dog's name is Pete, sometimes referred to Peg Leg Pete or Black Pete. Pete is a large anthropomorphic character and Mickey Mouse's nemesis. Pete was originally designed as a large cat but his appearance changed over the years, giving him a decidedly dog-like appearance, and he even had the nickname Mad Dog Pete at one point in his long career as Mickey's antagonist. Pete is a classic Disney villain and not necessarily evil, but selfish; not a virtuous trait.
Disney Villain Dog Name Considerations
When choosing a Disney villain as a dog's name, owners want to be certain of choice. Villains tend to get a negative judgement from the community, for obvious reasons. Some Disney villains are notoriously evil, like Ursula from The Little Mermaid whereas others are only slightly bad, like LeFou from Beauty and the Beast. Some Disney villains come in pairs and are associated with a certain look. Take Flotsam and Jetsam for example. These are Ursula the Sea Witch's two electric eels, and they are sly and inseparable. Their long thin bodies might be a good match for a pair of black Dachshunds who are hopefully not half as evil as these two. In the world of Oliver from Oliver and Company, a particularly bad duo exists as Roscoe and Desoto. Both or these dogs are large Doberman Pinschers. While the two animated dogs are purely villainous, owners of a pair of Doberman Pinschers watchdogs may want to consider their names.
Other considerations to be made regarding naming a dog after a Disney villain include the disposition and appearance of the villain. For example, Fidget from The Great Mouse Detective is a cunning and sometimes forgetful bat and the righthand man to the story's villain. Given his appearance, owners might consider his name for a French Bulldog; a breed sometimes referred to a bat dog for their large, bat-like ears.
