Introduction
Dog Names Ending in 'e' in Pop Culture
Patrasche is the dog found in the children's classic novel by Ouida titled A Dog of Flanders. Believe it or not, this story caught on and became very popular in Japan and Korea before it caught the attention of readers in Europe and America. This story is about Nello, a Flemish boy who was orphaned very early in life and taken in by his grandfather. Nello and his grandfather find a dog who was nearly beaten to death. After expertly nursing and loving him back to health, Nello and the dog (now named Patrasche) become closer than brothers. Nello's grandfather dies and Nello and Patrasche find themselves alone again. Nello, always having a dream to be a painter, tries unsuccessfully to gain entrance to the cathedral of Antwerp to see two famous art exhibitions. He is denied access since he has no money. Homeless, he and Patrasche return to the cathedral on Christmas Eve in hopes that they'll find the doors unlocked or open, and are found frozen to death on the steps of the cathedral the next morning. There are numerous statues which have been erected in several countries in memory of this touching and endearing story.
The second featured famous pop culture dog with a name ending in 'e' is Blue from Blue's Clues, a children's TV series. Blue is a female puppy (even though her color "blue" might suggest she's male) and she appears with a cast of other male and female characters in the series. Blue communicates with her human owner Steve (and later Joe) through a series of barks which the humans understand. In each episode, a game is played in which a question is asked and Blue leaves three paw print clues for Steve (and later Joe) to follow to get the answer to the question. Blue appears in each of the 160 episodes of Blue's Clues and Blue's Room. The interesting part about this series is that Steve and Joe are real people but Blue, Magenta, Mailbox, Mr. Salt and Mrs. Pepper, Papricka, Tickey Tock, Slippery Soap and the rest of the gang are animated characters.
