Introduction
For those of you who are new pet parents, as well as those of you who aren’t so new at pet parenting, now that you’ve brought home your new four-legged adorable addition to your family, there lies ahead so many exciting and memorable moments to enjoy. Along with those memories will also come some responsibilities; you will need to take care of periodic immunizations, regular checkups for your pup with your vet, feeding regimens, exercise requirements, potty training, leash training and, of course, there is the naming of your new pup. While naming your pet seems quite burdensome, it needn’t be so.
Dog Names Ending in 'zy' in Pop Culture
Pop culture genres can provide a wide variety of stories containing contributions from canines that can range from saving a life, to surviving impossible conditions, to turning the heart of a man from hard to soft regarding dogs. Our first pop culture dog with a name ending in "zy" is Buzzy, a Briard Sheepdog who belonged to Thomas Jefferson, a former President of the United States. Buzzy’s story is an interesting one to be sure and I hope you’ll follow along with me. Thomas Jefferson (1743 to 1826) as a young man, really didn’t think very highly of dogs. It didn’t help that he lived in an era in which property owners kept dogs only for purposes of hunting and herding, didn't feed them regularly, forcing the dogs to kill the sheep to survive during the times of forced famine. In 1809, the United States began importing Merino sheep from Spain and the price of wool skyrocketed, making the killing of sheep for any reason more distasteful than ever, causing local dog ordinances to be established and taxes to be levied against those dog owners. Jefferson was about to experience a significant change of heart. He served as the Minister to France from 1784 to 1789 and, while in that role, he was exposed to the writings of Georges-Louis Leclerc, the Comte de Buffon (1707-1788), becoming convinced that Leclerc was the greatest informed naturalist the literary genre had ever known. The opinion that caught Jefferson’s attention was that the Briard Sheepdog was the most intelligent and had the finest character of any dog he knew, saying of the breed that it was “instinctively prone to industry”. Jefferson, always having been a man who valued having the best of the natural world, endeavored to bring home a Briard when he returned to the United States. He did accomplish this task, bringing back not only Buzzy but also two puppies which she produced during the voyage home. Thomas Jefferson, being the intelligent man that he was, became enamored of the Briard Sheepdog breed as he worked to increase their numbers and popularity in the United States.
Our second pop culture dog with a name ending in "zy" is Izzy. Izzy is a 9 year old Bernese Mountain Dog who lived with her human family in the Santa Rosa area of California. In 2017, during the wildfires which devastated that region, she could not be found when her family had to evacuate in the wee hours of the morning, causing her to be left behind. It was several days before it was safe for anyone to re-enter the area after the fires were extinguished. Two brothers-in-law hiked through the devastation that they used to call home, in search of Izzy's remains, making a video record of their search for the benefit of their mom. Believe it or not, when they found the remains of their totally destroyed home, from amid the ruins, out came Izzy, having been alone for over 48 hours in intense heat! Veterinarians checked her out and said that it is likely her thick coat protected her from the intense heat - Izzy was fine, though traumatized and dehydrated. She was ecstatic to have been found as was the family she loved.
