Introduction
The term โboldโ is used to describe someone who is brave, courageous and willing to take risks. While this descriptive term is usually used to refer to humans, it is also applicable to animals, particularly dogs. There are loads of stories and accounts about the courageous acts carried out by dogs, such as protecting their owners from harm or working as rescue dogs for the police department. Even something as simple as watching over the house while the family is gone for the holidays can be considered a bold act. This is why dog names meaning bold or brave are extremely popular among dog owners. Many of these dog lovers want to showcase their dogโs valor through their name.
Dog Names Meaning Bold in Pop Culture
Given the innate bravery that most dogs possess, it is no wonder that a lot of famous dogs bear a name that epitomizes boldness and courageousness. An example of this is a real-life dog hero named Riley, from Maryland. Riley, which means โvaliantโ in Irish, is a famous mixed breed who has been helping save the lives of many people since he was a young pup. He is a prolific blood donor in the state of Maryland and donates blood every six weeks. According to the Blue Ridge Veterinary Blood Bank, the center where Riley often donates blood, Rileyโs blood donation over the years has helped save the lives of approximately 224 dogs or more. The story of Riley and his willingness to help other dogs through blood donation became national news. His bravery makes him well deserving of his name.
Another dog whose name means โboldโ, one who is even more high-profile and well-known, is the Siberian Husky named Balto. Derived from the name โBaldoโ, which means โbold and braveโ, Balto was the sled dog who led a pack of dogs during the last leg of the serum run to Nome in 1925. This run involved having to transport an antitoxin from Anchorage to Nenana via train and then to Nome through a dog sled. The antitoxin was needed to prevent a disease outbreak.
In 1925, a lethal epidemic was recognized by some doctors, one that could potentially wipe out the young people of Nome. Unfortunately, the only antitoxin that can fight this disease was miles away, in Anchorage, Alaska. At the time, the machine that can be used to deliver the serum was frozen and the officials had to rely on dog sled teams to get the serum to Nome. From Anchorage to Nenana, the serum was transported by train. After the arrival in Nenana, a relay team was formed in order to deliver the serum. Gunnar Kaasen and his dog sled team, led by Balto, were in charge of the final leg of the run to Nome. Despite whiteout conditions, Balto proved himself over and over, saving his dog team and Kaasen in the Topkok River. Kaasen, Balto and the other dogs eventually made it to Nome after a grueling journey. At Nome, Balto was celebrated and hailed a hero.
The aftermath of the serum run was massive. Kaasen and Balto were considered national celebrities and received much attention from the press and media. Then-president Calvin Coolidge also commended the team for their valiant effort in delivering the serum. A statue of Balto was built in Central Park, New York City. In 1995, an animated film entitled Balto, was released. The filmโs plot was loosely based on Balto and his journey.
Dog Name Meaning Bold Considerations
When getting a new dog, there are lots of things that must be taken into account. One of the first things that a dog owner will ponder is their new furbabyโs name. In general, it is best to choose a name that is not too long, preferably containing only one or two syllables at most. The reasoning for this is that most, if not all dogs are only capable of remembering the first two syllables of a word. Having said that, it would be a waste to give your dog too long of a name since they might not even recall it. When it comes to naming your dog, simplicity is key.
If your dog is one that exemplifies boldness and bravery, you may want to choose a fitting name. There are lots of names that mean โboldโ or something similar. A good way to choose among these names is by considering your dogโs country of origin. For instance, if you own a German dog breed, such as a German Shepherd or a Great Dane, you may want to choose a German name that means โboldโ. An example of such name is โBaldricโ, which is an Old German name meaning โbold and braveโ. You may also look at the many attributes your dog has and use that as inspiration for a name.
