Introduction
Dogs have long been considered as “man’s best friend” and up to and including today, they have lived up to this title. Most dog owners do not treat their dogs as just pets; they recognize their dogs as their buddies. For the longest time, dogs have served lots of purposes, including hunting, herding, protecting and so much more. For their part, humans provide food, shelter and other basic needs that their dog might have. This give and take relationship is one of the many reasons why humans and dogs form a strong and special bond. The best way to promote your dog to “friend” status is to give them a friendly name.
Dog Names Meaning Friend in Pop Culture
Dogs are extremely abundant in pop culture works and are often depicted as friends or companions. Out of all the common dog names that mean “friend”, the most prominent one is “Buddy”. This probably has to do with the fact that the name is not only symbolic of friendship, it is also simple and easy for dogs to learn. One of the most dogs named “Buddy” was the Golden Retriever who was also a canine actor. Buddy experienced immense fame thanks to his roles as “Buddy” in the movie Air Bud and as “Comet” in the movie Full House.
Buddy was originally a stray dog who was found and adopted by Kevin Dicicco in the year 1989. After finding Buddy, Dicicco took him to his home in San Diego. It was here where Dicicco start teaching various sports to Buddy, including basketball, football, hockey, baseball and soccer. Out of all the sports, it was basketball that Buddy liked the most, even being dubbed as the “Michael Jordan” of dogs. In his early years, Buddy appeared in a number of shows, the first being on America’s Funniest Home Videos. He was eventually discovered and was asked to appear at the Late Show with David Letterman, where he showed off his basketball tricks.
Because of the exposure, Buddy soon began landing bigger roles. From seasons 4 to 8 of the television series Full House, he played the role of Comet. When the show ended, he landed the starring role in the 1995 film Fluke, where he played the titular character. However, it was in the Disney film Air Bud where Buddy became most prominent. In the movie, he played Buddy, who was abandoned by an alcoholic owner. He finds solace with a boy named Josh, who was struggling due to his father’s death. The two form a strong bond through their love for the sport of basketball.
Air Bud became a huge success for Disney and catapulted Buddy into stardom. Unfortunately, Air Bud would be Buddy’s final acting role. On February 10, 1998, Buddy passed away due to cancer. He left behind nine puppies, who would go on to continue his legacy through other films in the Air Bud franchise.
Another famous dog named Buddy, a chocolate Labrador Retriever owned by the Clintons while Bill Clinton served as the United States President. Named after Clinton’s great-uncle, whom he had a great relationship with, Buddy was one of two dogs that the family owned during their White House residence. It was a known fact that Clinton and Buddy formed a great relationship. However, in 2002, Buddy was ran over by a car. To get over his grief of losing Buddy, Clinton got another chocolate Labrador Retriever named “Seamus”.
