Introduction
Dog Names Meaning Moon in Pop Culture
Our canine companions frequently are found to be extensions of who we are and the many things we do, either for entertainment or for a living. Sometimes, those craggy companions are quite formidable as they “extend” our reach in our preferred careers. Our pop culture spotlight, Titan, shares his name with a Saturn moon as well as a Greek mythical strongman.
Our Titan is a K9 cop who works for the Pasco County Sheriff’s office in Florida. He is a 2-year-old German Shepherd who was donated to the department by Wesley Chapel Nissan in December 2015. He was teamed up with Sgt. W. Ferguson, and after hard work together, the team received their FDLE Patrol K9 Team certification in 2016, after four months of training in Patrol School.
Why is this certification important? Well, you could ask 24-year old Kevin Wilson, but it is unlikely that Kevin will openly care to discuss his encounter with Titan on September 18, 2018, in Newport Richey, Florida. You could also read the Fox News articles about the event that brought Kevin and Titan together (literally). You see, Kevin entered a home and attempted to kidnap a baby girl. He had grabbed the baby, threatening her mother that she would never see the baby again, but a gun-wielding uncle prevented the abduction. Kevin fled the scene, hoping to escape law enforcement notice. Not so! Tracked by air and on land by Pasco County Sheriff’s deputies, with nearby schools placed on lock-down, officers pursued him on foot - four feet to be specific. The body cam worn by Sgt. W. Ferguson revealed a spectacular “collar” by Titan, who, upon command, latched onto and held the suspect. Refusing to comply with officers orders to get onto his stomach for apprehension, Titan had sunk his teeth into Wilson’s arm, firmly holding Wilson, awaiting the command to release him. On the video, Sgt. W. Ferguson is heard telling the suspect that the dog would not let go until Kevin complied with the order to get on his stomach.
As one would expect, with the robust set of jaws possessed by the German Shepherd named Titan, the perpetrator did eventually see the value of compliance to the orders of the Sheriff’s deputies and rolled over onto his belly. The command to release given, and custody of Wilson accomplished, after that he was charged appropriately to fit his actions.
