Introduction
Dog Names that Start with 'As' in Pop Culture
The scene was a bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Building in Oklahoma, a situation which was responsible for trapping and killing many people. Aspen, being a special task training canine in the Urban Search and Rescue unit for the Miami-Dade Fire Department, saw lots of active service as a member of that unit. The U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) operate an Urban Search and Rescue Task Force that are called upon to respond to disasters whether natural or human-made, both nationally as well as internationally.
Our pop culture girl named Aspen, assigned to the Special Operations Division of the Canine Search and Rescue Unit of the Miami-Dade area, is part of a unit that works with FEMA and the Foreign Disaster Assistance task forces. She was a member of this unit for over five years, utilized in search and rescue operations resulting from earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes, aircraft crashes, building collapses in Puerto Rico as well as a variety of missing person searches. It is no wonder that she and her handler, firefighter and paramedic Anthony "Skip" Fernandez, were called into service in the aftermath of the bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Building in Oklahoma City in 1995. Her specialized training and impressive tracking abilities qualified her for a live victim and body recovery, again becoming a vital tool as she assisted in tracking and isolating survivors buried in the rubble of the bombing.
During her years of service in the field of search and rescue, Aspen received many awards, citations and special recognition for her expertise, some of which include the ASPCA Trooper Award in New York City, commendations from the government of Peru, the FBI, Martin County Sheriff's Department, and the Miami-Dade Sheriff and Police Departments. She traveled throughout Florida, Georgia, and Peru, establishing the canine SAR units in those areas. So successful and influential was she in this activity, that in 1997, when the state of Florida enacted a state law that protects SAR canines, the bill became known as "Aspen Search and Rescue Dog Protection Act." To further establish the appreciation of her efforts in the field, AKC inducted her into their Hall of Fame!
