Introduction
Dog Names that Start with 'Bi' in Pop Culture
These life-saving skills continue today and our pop culture spotlight for today encapsulates this. Bilbo, a giant Newfoundland dog who lives in Britain, is credited with the saving of three lives while patrolling the beaches at Sennen, Cornwall. Bilbo, born in 2003 and passing away in 2015, was owned by Steve Jamieson, who himself is a rescuer. Bilbo is designed for rescue as the Newfoundland breed is specially equipped to help in water situations. When Steve trained for rescue so did Bilbo, his best bud, and companion. Bilbo, genetically built for the job, had webbed feet and a large rudder we call a tail, both of which propelled him easily and speedily through the water. He could swim 1300 feet in less than seven minutes, an exercise which enabled him to reach flailing victims quickly. He was a welcome sight to those who bathed and surfed around Land's End in Cornwall where he lived.
Bilbo's activities came to be recognized in 2008 when a new bylaw passed which prohibited dogs from being on the beach. As you would expect, after about two years of providing a protective presence for beachgoers and surfers, there was quite an uproar as law enforcement officials attempted to enforce the new bylaw. It seemed that gone were the days when Bilbo would ride atop a quad bike, ready to dive in to support afflicted victims, swimming a loop around them, providing a floatation device attached to his harness on to which they could grasp for rescue. An estimated 20,000 people signed various petitions in protest of the new bylaw, actions which prompted officials to arrive at a compromise. They allowed Bilbo to return to the beach two days a week as a part of a sea safety campaign they were waging at the time. After that, Bilbo became part of a safety campaign in the schools which encouraged and taught children valuable lessons on sea safety.
