Introduction
Dog Names that Start with 'Bu' in Pop Culture
Bullet and Butkus are the precious pets of the families of actor Roy Rogers (films released in the 1950's) and the more recent Sylvester Stallone of "Rocky" fame. Both dogs were frequent and vital personages with their human masters in both public, film and private life.
Bullet and the Roy Rogers Show (1951 to 1957) was a favorite film and TV event for the period. Roy Rogers and Dale Evans family pet, Bullet, was a German Shepherd Dog who did all of the things any worthwhile and loving dog should do: alerting Roy and Dale of danger, or gnawing the ropes that frequently bond them and helped catch the bad guys. He could run like the wind, easily keeping up with Roy's horse Trigger, as the duo raced along the dusty trails in pursuit of danger. Like any good family dog, Bullet also loved his regular traveling with Roy's funny sidekick and cook, Pat Brady, in his Jeep, named Nellybelle, as well as getting his favorite handout from Dale in the Eureka Cafe.
Butkus is the 140-pound Bull Mastiff owned by Sylvester "Sly" Stallone, coming into Sly's family in 1969 as a 6-week-old puppy. So fierce looking was he, especially after eating his blanket, Sylvester named him after Dick Butkus, who was to Sly the "fiercest football player in history." When Sly began his acting career, Butkus wasn't even remotely part of his plan. Becoming apparent that using an officially trained canine actor was not in his budget, Sly looked closely at best bud Butkus. Butkus level of intelligence and ability to think on his feet shined through, increasing Butkus value as an actor. For those"Rocky" fans, we don't have to tell you about the close relationship seen in the film, or need to explain that was a natural one.
