Introduction
Dog Names that Start with C in Pop Culture
Chance is an American Bulldog who is one of those companions. In the Disney movie, Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey, he, together with Shadow, an older Golden Retriever and Sassy, a Himalayan cat, who, after being left (temporarily) with a family friend living in another state, begin an incredible journey that will capture your heart, if you have one. It seems their human parents are newly weds and take them to San Francisco to be cared for by a family friend while they go on their honeymoon. One would think the trio would be quite satisfied on the large expanse of the ranch owned by the family friend, but, feeling as though they have been abandoned, the separation anxiety leads them on a trek that is truly incredible. Led by the tracking instincts of the Golden Retriever, Shadow, they traverse through mountainous areas, facing the need to hunt their own food, find their own water and face many dangerous wild animals and situations with which they are not accustomed. By combining the efforts, instincts and inherited traits, the trio eventually get reconnected with their human family, having come to a deeper level of appreciation of "home" and "family" that none of them had before their journey.
Our second Featured Famous Pop Culture dog with a name starting with C is Chips, a Shepherd, Collie, Husky mix, who has the honor of being the most famous and decorated sentry dog in World War II. There were 10,425 canines who served in the Quartermasters' "new K-9 Corps", a group of dogs who were trained to serve as sentries for the Army and Coast Guard. These dogs helped to prevent infiltration of America's long coast line by enemy saboteurs during the war. Of the 10,425 canines in the K-9 Corps, only above 1,000 of them were trained as scouts... and Chips was one of those canines. H was awarded the Purple Cross and the Silver Star (to name only two of his many medals) for his heroism in the capture of a hidden machine gun nest and the detection of an infiltration of a 10 member band of Italian soldiers. After an uproar among military officials, which involved a Congressional hearing of three months duration, it was decided that medals and awards could not be given to "non-humans" and Chips' medals were taken away. He may have lost his medals but not his grit, and those men whose lives he saved, even the Supreme Commander General Dwight Eisenhower, never forgot his courage and heroism. Those brave men honored Chips "unofficially", the military position on "non-humans" notwithstanding! He continued to serve in military capacity until December of 1945 when he was honorably discharged and returned to the home of his owner. He died seven months later complications received in the war, at the age of 6.
