Dog Names that Start with K

As you consider the possible name for that cute cuddly canine, who is languidly lying in your lap, you might wish to consider some of the famous friends with whom many of us grew up.  Some of my most pleasant memories as a child revolve around dogs who appeared in a variety of ways in TV programs, and I'm sure many of you can also relate.  If you're over 45 years old, I'm sure most of you can remember the endearing TV series called Lassie and the heart felt situations in which she found herself.  But, do any of you remember the Sergeant Preston of the Yukon TV series?   The TV series was placed in the Yukon region of Canada, involved good old Sergeant Preston, a Canadian Mounted Police officer, his trusty horse named Rex and Yukon King, his dog.   King was an Alaska Malamute whom Sergeant Preston rescued as a pup, who became a trusted companion and was his most dependable ally in his crime fighting activities in the cold extremes of northern Canada.  Chasing and apprehending criminals as well as rescuing people lost in the frigid conditions of the Yukon, King was certainly deserving of the title of "wonder dog", especially in light of the fact that he was also the fastest and strongest lead dog on Preston's sled team. Not only was King of all this, he also possessed keen instincts for tracking of criminals and wild animals and, more than once in the series, was seen fending off and killing vicious wolves known to inhabit the region.  The series began as a 15 to 30 minute radio series in 1938 and was converted to a TV series in 1955, running from 1955 to 1958 and airing a total of 78 episodes in that 3 year span.

Our second featured famous dog with a name that starts with K is Kipper the Dog.  Kipper is a dog depicted in a British animated children's TV series, which was taken from a book series of the same name, written by British author Mick Inkpen.  The book series is a sweet assortment of stories in which Kipper enters into many exciting episodes with his friends Tiger, Pig, Arnold and Jake.  The book series, as of July 2005, is comprised of 34 books targeted for pre-school children, winning a multitude of awards, selling more than 8 million copies and having been translated (at that time) into over 20 different languages.

These two spotlights certainly got our attention in their hey day and still offer some sweet memories for those of us who enjoyed them as children.  They also offered some great life lessons with many important life issues being taught, using two very different methods, to help children learn some very basic things to build some groundwork for the next level of their development.
