Native to the Netherlands, the Dutch Shepherd is a herding dog that was used mainly for farming purposes. The breed bears a resemblance to other Shepherd-type of dogs such as Belgian and German Shepherds because they all share a close ancestry, making them “cousin” breeds. A jack of all trades, the Dutch Shepherd is not only known for being a farm dog, they are also used for other purposes such as service animals, police dogs and house companions. Nowadays, Dutch Shepherds are enjoying a resurgence in popularity in their home country and have become a top choice for a home pet.
Dutch Shepherd Dog Names in Pop Culture
When it comes to pop culture references, the Dutch Shepherd is not as popular and as heavily featured as other Shepherd-type canines, particularly the German Shepherd and Belgian Shepherd. There have been, however, a few films wherein a Dutch Shepherd has played some notable roles. One of the more memorable Dutchies to have a starring role is in the 2015 fantasy and adventure film The Amazing Wizard of Paws.
In The Amazing Wizard of Paws, a young boy named Bobby Spade finds out that his faithful dog, a Dutch Shepherd named Ozzy, is actually a 600-year old dog who was once owned by a wizard with great power. After discovering magical book of spells from an ancient wizard, Bobby and Ozzy find themselves bestowed with magical powers.
Because of the powers he received, Bobby suddenly wants to become the most popular magician in the world. Ozzy, who unexpectedly gains infinite wisdom, works by Bobby’s side to help him achieve his goals. With their newly acquired powers, the duo magicians start to go through a series of amazing adventures. They also meet some new people who become enchanted by their skills. These adventures include escaping bullies from school by casting some spells.
Bobby also decides to use his new powers for good by trying to save the Spade family home. He plans to do this by joining the National Million Dollar Talent Show with Ozzy. However, the duo encounters some problems caused by Lord Gragheon, an evil wizard who lost the spell book years ago. As the film ends, Lord Gragheon and Bobby, with Ozzy’s help, engage in a magical duel to claim ownership of the book.
Another film where a Dutch Shepherd can be seen is in the 2010 film First Dog. The film tells the true to life story of Little Bear, a Dutch Shepherd who was fostered by the Reagan family during their time at the White House. In the film, Bryan Michael Stoller was enjoying his usual order of bagel and cream cheese at his favorite breakfast place when he bumped into a lady and his puppy. Stoller instantly fell in love with the pup and, just as luck would have it, the lady told him that the puppy was actually up for adoption. It was not until a month after he adopted Little Bear when found out that the dog was actually fostered by the Reagans.
There are several other films where the Dutch Shepherd has appeared, although most of them are only in minor roles or appearing in the background. Examples of these films include The Breed, Beverly Hills Chihuahua and Case 39.
Dutch Shepherd Dog Name Considerations
When getting a new dog, you are automatically taking on the task of choosing a name. There are many considerations to be made before settling on a final decision. Firstly, the length of the name should be taken into account. It is common knowledge among dog lovers that short names, particularly no more than two or three syllables, are ideal for dogs. This is because they can only recall the first few syllables of any word. If you end up choosing a long name, make sure that you can come up with a shortened version of this name, which will make things easier when you need to call out or command your dog.
Another possible consideration is the dog’s country of origin. In this case, the Dutch Shepherd originated from the Netherlands. Hence, it is only fitting that owners of the breed give their dog a popular Dutch name or anything related to Holland’s rich culture.
You may also use the dog’s many attributes as inspiration for a name. The Dutch Shepherd is a muscular, medium-sized dog that comes in a brindle coat. As for the personality and temperament, the Dutch Shepherd is strong, lively, alert and independent. Moreover, the breed is known for their loyalty and willingness to work with their owners. Any of these qualities can be used as basis for a name.
