Introduction
E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial Dog Names in Pop Culture
Elliot and E.T. develop a bond that is more than mere friendship. E.T. knows how to harness himself to Elliot in a psychic way. When Elliot has to go to school, E.T. causes him to not only kiss one of his classmates, but to release a number of frogs in his science class. These two events are caused by E.T.'s reading a comic book in which the hero rescues an alien and receives a congratulatory kiss from a love interest. Soon, away from his home planet, E.T. begins to fall ill. Because of their connection, so does Elliot. He realizes that he must help his alien friend go home in order to keep E.T. alive.
Another Elliot always ready for an adventure is the featured pup in Greg G. Zaino's book, Elliot the Dog: Love and a Smelly Dog. Zaino details many of his daily trips around the neighborhood with his pup, Elliot. However, don't dismiss the nature of Elliot's outdoor ventures. They are more than mere strolls with his owner. On these daily walks, Elliot often faces people and things that frighten him; however, Elliot learns to face these fears successfully. Elliot also finds himself falling in love while out and about. In many ways, Elliot shares the personality of his pup (and quite possibly, Zaino uses Elliot as a symbol for himself). For instance, Elliot learns to forgive those who have hurt him in order to have a happy life; this is more of a metaphor for the author's life experiences rather than Elliot's personal journey. Readers praise Zaino's descriptions of Elliot's expressions, and many quips courtesy of Elliot are quite funny. The reader often relates to Elliot's reactions to his experiences, and in many ways, the audience can learn a lesson from the dog's life. Zaino's commentary on his experiences with his dog is the epitome of the joy of a pup - human relationship.
