Famous Bollywood Dog Names

There are several things that India is known for, such as delicious food, beautiful tourist destinations and a booming film industry. But there is one other thing that stands out in this Asian country – a huge population of dogs. In fact, India has an estimated 10 million dogs, which is why it is not surprising that canines are embedded in their culture.

Because of the country’s fondness for these four-legged friends, they are often featured in pop culture, specifically in films. In Bollywood, there are numerous films where dogs play a supporting or even a starring role. The top example of a dog-centric Bollywood film is Teri Meherbaniyan.

Unlike other Bollywood films, this 1985 Hindi-language film bills a dog, named Brownie, as the star, with actor Jackie Shroff in a supporting role. The plot of the film involves Ram, played by Shroff, a young man who unintentionally runs over a stray puppy while riding on his motorbike. Out of guilt, he takes the pup to the veterinarian to get him checked. From there, he decides to bring the puppy home, naming him Moti, to raise him as his own.

Some years later, Ram and Moti end up visiting a village run by an evil man named Thakur Vijay Singh. When his motorbike breaks down, he bumps into a woman named Bijli. The two eventually fall in love and Ram stays in the village. Meanwhile, Thakur’s men, Munim and Sardari, have asserted their authority in and are using threats to exploit the poor. However, Ram decides to stand up to the men and soon help the villagers reap the rewards owed to them by Thakur. Though the men clash with Ram, they are defeated and soon retreat to inform their boss.

Because of this, Ram is soon noticed by Thakur and decides that he wants Bijli for himself. So, when Ram had plans to leave the village for business, he asks his dog Moti to watch over Bijli. While Ram was gone, Bijli locks Moti up since she was getting tired of him following her around. While Moti was locked up, Thakur and his men pay a visit to Bijli in an attempt to sexually abuse her. Refusing to be raped, Bijli kills herself instead. Ram returns and punishes Moti for not fulfilling his duty but his friends, Gopi and Sharda, stop him and tells Ram that it was Bilji who caged the dog. Thakur and his men return to murder Ram and frame his friend Gopi for the crime. The men also kidnap Sharda as Thakur has set his sights on her.  

To avenge his master’s death, Moti recalls the events that took place before the murder and decides to go on a killing spree. He ultimately hunts, terrorizes and kills all the individuals who were responsible for Ram’s death. He also saves Sharda from captivity. Moti was also able to lead the police to Ram’s camcorder, which contains a video of the murder. The movie shows a scene where Moti is seen lying beside Ram’s grave while the song Teri Meherbaniyan plays in the background.
