Introduction
Fawn Dog Names in Pop Culture
I love rags to riches stories, don’t you? Some may live in a fairytale world, but we love it when the prince rescues the princess from the wicked ogre, or when the good guy gets the girl, or the poor family hits the lottery, or when a rescue dog gets a forever home - and when that same dog makes it big in the movie industry. There are so many canines who have been abandoned or mistreated and eventually find their way into an animal shelter. And, while the shelters do all that they can to care for the dogs, they can’t give them the same level of love as is available in a forever home relationship.
Our pop culture spotlight today is Benji, and he is a rescued canine turned movie star! His real name is Higgins, and he is a mixed breed canine who was found in the Burbank Animal Shelter near Hollywood by a veteran Hollywood animal trainer named Frank Inn in 1960. Frank made a habit of checking the animal shelters first when he needed an animal for a movie, and when Higgins was found, he already had a menagerie of some 100 dogs. Readily admitting that Higgins was the smartest dog he’d ever worked with, Frank fell in love and bonded deeply with Higgins.
Higgins had found his forever home, and it was filled with lots of love, but that’s not all Higgins found. Higgins had found a niche into which he fits perfectly, his shaggy, loveable appearance, his intelligence level and his willingness to learn (and remember) a new trick every day endeared him to everyone he met. He played the nameless dog in Petticoat Junction as well as guest appearances on The Beverly Hillbillies and Green Acres.
Though he was marked similar to a Border Terrier, we don’t know what breeds make up this adorable actor, but Frank Inn suspected Higgins' heritage to be Miniature Poodle, Cocker Spaniel, and Schnauzer. This shaggy little brown dog snuggled his way into the hearts of all the humans with whom he performed, especially Edgar Buchanan, who played the role of Uncle Joe Carson on Petticoat Junction. He possessed an ability to display a broad range of emotions by facial expressions, learning to sneeze and yawn on cue, warming the hearts of millions in the Benji series as well as those earlier films.
