Introduction
The French Pointing Dog, also known as the Braque Francais, is a medium-sized hunting dog bred to hunt in rugged terrain. They are an ancient breed that has had to evolve from intense hunter to family companion. The French Pointing Dog is an active dog that enjoys spending time outdoors with their family. Because they are a higher energy dog, the French Pointing Dog needs early training and socialization to ensure they are able to fit into a family home. For the most part, the French Pointing Dog is great with children, however, if they are not raised with children they should be closely supervised until it is determined how they will react.
French Pointing Dog Names in Pop Culture
With all the different pointing breeds throughout the world, the French Pointing Dog is probably not the first one most people think of when they are asked to name a pointer. These rare gun dogs are active and love to be in the field tracking their prey. Gertie, or Three Rivers Gundogs Gertrude, TAN, HUNT, would rather be out in the field than stuck inside on bright, sunny days. Gertie has participated in the North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association’s (NAVHDA) field trials and at just eleven months old earned a NA 97 Prize III certification. She also earned her Utility Preparatory Test (UPT) and her Utility Test through the NAVHDA. While competing in Plankinton, South Dakota in April of 2018 at a United Kennel Club (UKC) field trial, Gertie earned an excellent rating in the Gun Dog class and passed her Natural Ability Test (TAN). In November of 2018 in Hillsboro, Illinois, Gertie participated in the UKC’s Gun Class; she passed the SEPDC Wild Bird Trial as a brace and as a solo dog. She earned her UKC HUNT title on November 11, 2018.
Gertie is a member of Unique Gundogs, located in Dardenne Prairie, Missouri, began in 2016 after their beloved 12 year old Brittany Spaniel was put to sleep. After researching various sporting breeds for over six months, the owners of Unique Gundogs discovered the French Pointing Dog as they knew they could never find another Brittany to live up to the greatness of the boy they had just lost. They needed a dog that would make a good family dog and be great with their twins, who were three years old at the time. They also wanted a dog that was medium in size. On top of it all, they wanted a dog that could excel in the field and be a great hunter but not high energy like the Brittany. Originally, they looked into the Small Munsterlander, going so far as to be put on a waitlist for a litter. But then an article in Gun Dog Magazine featuring the French Pointing Dog caught their attention. They got into contact with Brad Boisen, French Pointing Dog breeder and President of the Braque Francais Club of North America. After more research, they found information on a litter of French Pointing Dogs born in September of 2016. This was Gertie’s litter and they put a deposit down for her. Gertie was brought home to Missouri the weekend before Thanksgiving at only 8 weeks of age.
French Pointing Dog Name Considerations
Bringing home a new puppy or even an adult dog is an exciting time for the family. A French Pointing Dog will make an ideal family companion because of their fun-loving and easy-going demeanor when they are not out in the field hunting. They love spending time with the whole family. Because the French Pointing Dog is a rare breed within the United States, you may need to be on a waitlist for a new puppy. When you do finally bring your new French Pointing Dog home, it will be time to find the right name for your newest family member. Being a breed that originated in France, begin your search with traditional French names and see which ones grab your attention and could possibly fit your new puppy’s personality. When choosing a name, take your time and get to know their personality, they will help you find the right name. You will also want to steer clear of any name that sounds similar to common commands you will be using in their training. You do not want to cause confusion down the road for your new puppy. Find a name that everyone in the family can agree on and can actually pronounce. Some traditional French names can be a mouthful even for the most fluent French speakers.
