The BBC children television series, Blue Peter, featured animals that appeared regularly (from 1978 - 1986) on the long running show. Some of the dogs who appeared on the show were Patch, Shep, Mable and Goldie. Goldie was a female Golden Retriever who made her first appearance on the show as the cutest of puppies. She was even named by the viewers of Blue Peter. With regular appearances on the show amongst a host of other presenters, Goldie left the show after several years with her owner Simon Groom (who had been a presenter on the show) and went on to have puppies, one who was named Bonnie, who took her place after she had left the show. Goldie was loved by many, and after her came a long line of Golden Retrievers who graced the show. She lived to 14 years of age, living a full and happy life on Simon's farm in Derbyshire.

Another dog called Goldie is not a canine movie star, but she is a star in her own right as she has been specially trained as a Guide Dog. A trio of siblings sponsored her after tragically losing their parents within a week of each other. The parents had always supported Guide Dogs, so the family decided to invest some of the money from the Estate to sponsor two beautiful litter mates. Goldie and Mandy's names came from the family, from their own dogs. After the hard road to train as specialty dogs, Mandy went on to become a psychologist's assistant, while Goldie - well, she now has a very important job looking after Richard, who was diagnosed with Retinal Detachment and later Glaucoma. Totally blind in one eye, and with only 3 percent vision remaining in his left eye, he relies on Goldie to guide him when out walking, negotiating shops, and of course, she is a fantastic companion, making Richard's life so much more fulfilling. Richard already had a dog, a rescue dog name Odie, and Goldie and Odie have bonded well and have fun when Goldie is not looking after Richard. Guide dogs are so well trained and can make an amazing difference in the life of a person with little or no vision. It takes a special dog to get through the rigorous training; a special dog like Goldie.

Choosing a dog's name doesn't have to be hard, it can be fun if you know how to go about it the right way. First of all, don't rush it. Your dog will not suffer mentally if it doesn't have a real name within the hour. Get to know this new fur ball that will be an integral part of your home for the next 10 plus years or so. Secondly, do a bit of research and build a list of names that appeal to you. Try to find as many as possible and just write them all down. Then put the list aside and play with your new buddy for a while. Then when he is snoozing, pull the list out and have another look. Some names will be culled immediately as you realise they are not appropriate for this new pooch. With the ones left on the list, try using the name in conjunction with commands you will train your dog with. Does the name sound right, can you get it out of your mouth without tripping over it? By doing these things, you will soon discover what works and what doesn't. Then it is just a matter of choosing your favorite and bestowing it upon your mate.
